"MOLDOVA-FILM" Studio was established in 1952. In the sixties and seventies its films were well-known not only is the FSU but world-wide. The studio released 165 fiction films, 1,900 documentary films, more than 50 animated cartoons, as well as hundreds of cinema and video series. Many of the films produced by the Studio were awarded at different International festivals. The famous fiction film "The last month of Autumn" won the Prix at Cannes and was awarded at Argentina film festival. The animated cartoon "Haiducul" (An Outlaw) won Prix at Cannes in animation. During that time, it was a key transit stop for Jewish merchants traveling between Constantinople and Poland. By 1812, the land had come under Russian rule. The Jewish population steadily increased, numbering more than 200,000 by 1897. In 1903 and 1905, two of the most brutal pogroms in Jewish history took place in the capital city of Kishinev. Enabled disabled girls at the orphanage to learn craft skills and sell some of their work. Clothed needy members of the public, including children who were previously unable to attend school. Its global view and outlook, together with a consistent search for improvement, has given a steady and positive result. On the 19th of September 2004, Moldovan Civil Aviation will celebrate its 60th anniversary. During the post war years, its fleet of 17 aircraft consisted of 15 PO-2 and 2 LI-2's. It started its operation with non scheduled services, but on the 01st of July 1945, it began its first regular flights to Moscow, which at that time was part of the U.S.S.R. In its first year of operation, regular flights were started to five regions in the republic, namely Tiraspol, Balts, Soroco, Lipcani and Orgeev. After almost 20 years, the first TU-134, AN-24 and cargo AN-26's arrived at Chisinau airport. This gave the opportunity for Moldovan aviation to expand its services to the major cities in the U.S.S.R, offering comfort and increased safety to the travelling public. Numbers of passengers, and the volume of cargo, increased considerably, and together with the opening of a new air terminal on the 12th of October 1974, inaugurated a new era of Moldovan civil aviation.

T.] OLDOVA, wedged between Romania and Ukraine, has changed noticeably since independence. A beautiful, fertile land of black soil and rolling hills, Moldova had been notably mismanaged by Soviet authorities for fifty years. Today, however, free from Moscow's aid and subsidies, the small republic is none the stronger: Moldova is an independent economy for the first time, yet its most vital trade relationships have bound it in renewed dependence upon Russia. Moldova is geographically, economically, and culturally stuck fast between East and West. Though not doomed as a country - it has seen a bit of promise in recent years - Moldova is certainly not as upwardly mobile as had once been hoped. Before moving to the capital city of Chisinau, I spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching in Drochia (pop. 20,000 and falling rapidly)-a pretty town in the north with wonderful people, but with problems of its own. While I lived there (1994-1996, 2 school years) I saw that Drochia was better off than many other small towns, in that the teachers of my school received their wages every few months, and did not once go on strike. This was quite unusual at that time; unfortunately, it is no longer true, as living conditions have worsened markedly since 1996. In January of 2000, for example, 20 school systems went on strike , and the teachers at Drochia's most prestigious lyceum were among the first to declare their unwillingness to return to work. In March of this year, every single Moldovan public school went on a 3-day strike-a strike well timed to correspond with the end of spring break, thus lengthening vacation a bit.
