Back to Moldova Geography Most of Moldova's approximately 33,700 square kilometers of territory (about the size of Maryland) cover a hilly plain cut deeply by many streams and rivers. Geologically, Moldova lies primarily on deep sedimentary rock that gives way to harder crystalline outcroppings only in the north, where higher elevations are found on the margins of the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The gently rolling Balti Plain (Stepa Balti, in Romanian; Bel'tskaya ravnina, in Russian) in northern Moldova (lying at ninety to 600 meters in elevation in the north) gives way to thick, deciduous forests in the Codri Hills (Podisul Codrilor, in Romanian; Kodry, in Russian), averaging 350 to 400 meters in elevation, where the most common trees are hornbeam, oak, linden, maple, wild pear, and wild cherry. The country's highest point, Mount Balanesti (Balaneshty, in Russian), is located in the west central portion of the country and reaches 430 meters. The Bugeac Plain (Budzhak, in Russian) in the south has numerous ravines and gullies. Transnistria has spurs of the Volyn-Podolian Upland (Podisul Podolie, in Romanian; VolynoPodil 's'ka vysochyna, in Ukrainian), which are cut into by tributaries of the Nistru River.

The decision not to participate in the joint forces of the CIS was made explicit by Parliament's rejection of the Alma-Ata Declaration of December 21, 1991. The number, training, and quality of the armed forces and the police have varied greatly since the republic's declaration of independence. In April 1991, Moldova passed legislation that exempted its residents from service in the Soviet armed forces and that granted immunity from prosecution to anyone declining to serve. A law on alternative service for conscientious objectors was passed later. Initially, political leaders intended to keep troop levels low. Moldova's plan for the regular armed forces was to recruit Moldovan citizens to serve in the army and national police and take over positions in Soviet military structures and in the Moldovan Ministry of National Security, which replaced the

History This naturally favorable land was populated since Paleolithic epoch. From archeological excavations we know that there were living people 7000 years BC on this territory. You can find the proof in a very interesting archeological museum in Chisinau city. Today Moldova occupies most of what has been known as Bessarabia , which represents less of the half of the historical Moldova . For many centuries Moldova was the victim of frequent warfare. The main reason was because Moldova's important location - a historic passageway between Asia and Europe. Romans, Huns, Tatars, Turks, Hungarians, Germans and many others passed through that land known as "The Gate" between the Carpathians and the Black Sea, which in the 13th century became part of the Mongol Empire. Moldova emerged as an independent state in the 14th century. The first document referring to the "Land of Moldova" dates back to 1359 AD. In 1391 AD, the ethnic group "Moldovans" was mentioned for the first time. The peak time in the formation of the medieval Moldovan state - situated between the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea - was the rule of Stefan III (1457-1504 AD). He was also called Stefan the Great and Saint and defended the sovereignty of Moldova in battles with Turkish Janissaries, Hungarian and Polish royal troops and Crimea Khans. During his rule no other nation could seize Moldova. He was known as a good diplomat and warrior. Other countries governors said that Stefan III was brave in wars and modest in good fortune. He had 47 battles and built 47 churches on those places as a memory. Stefan the Great is real national hero in Republic of Moldova.

Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Dniester River supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, who have proclaimed a "Transnistria" republic. The poorest nation in Europe is landlocked.

Independence has not solved all of Moldova's problems and has, in fact, created some new ones. The Slavic minorities in Transdniestr are keen to retain their cultural and social ties with Russia, while in the south the Turkish-speaking Gagauz minority are worried about possible reunification with Romania. As soon as Moldova cut the umbilical cord and declared itself a republic, the Transdniestr authorities seceded from the republic and reiterated their loyalty to Mother Russia. Matters were further complicated when the Gagauz started muttering about their own breakaway republic in the southeast. The brand new Moldovan republic was shrinking by the minute. Eventually the Gagauz relented after promises of greater regional autonomy and representation in government, but the Transdniestr republic has remained obstinate in its refusal to join Moldova. An uneasy compromise was reached with a tripartite Russian-Transdniestran-Moldovan peacekeeping force operating in the area, but sporadic fighting between rebel separatists and Moldovan military forces still occurred, and there were constant calls for official recognition of independence from hardline secessionists.

An American in Chisinau
I will be honest. I got the internship in Moldova last summer through my mother, Pamela Hyde Smith, who is the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. That may sound far-fetched, but as a child of two diplomats (a "dip-brat," as they like to say), I was used to being carted off to the four corners of the Earth. All I knew was that I would be writing for some non-governmental organization called PFAP, and I figured that the experience would be applicable somewhere down the road. What a shock it was to step off a 24-hour plane ride, have one night to sleep it off, then go straight to work. So before drifting off into that familiar jet-lag-induced slumber in the comfortably recognizable embassy furniture, I sheepishly asked my mother what PFAP stood for, anyway. "Private Farmers Assistance Program," she said, without batting an eye. In between her visits and interviews with Moldovan farmers, Smith made time to visit local shops featuring hand-sewn garments. Farmers?! I began to realize the gravity of my situation. I knew nothing about farming. In fact, I had never even been on a farm. A whole summer of traipsing around the fields of Moldova and I wasn't even getting paid? Combined with this spoiled feeling of irritation was a feeling of guilt for having accepted an aid-work internship without understanding what it entailed.

History and Government
History: Moldova’s Latin influence arises from its position on the fringes of the Roman Empire between AD 105 and 270. Over the next thousand years, the region variously came under the control of Huns, Ostrogoths, Magyars and Mongols. The Hungarians were in occupation when, in 1349, Prince Bogdan established an independent principality (hence its original name of Bogdania before its present title, taken from the Moldova River in modern-day Romania). In 1512, the Ottomans moved in and more or less kept hold of the territory for the next three centuries. As an imperial border state (once again), Moldova was subject to frequent incursions by neighbouring powers, mainly the Russians who finally took over Moldova in 1792 under the terms of the treaty of Iasi. By 1861, Moldova had assumed its present form, including the sliver of land known as Transdnistria, to the east of the Dniester River and stretching east as far as the Romanian border (the territory went through more divisions, reallocations and occupation in the period up to 1945). The decision to ally with one or the other of its two more powerful neighbours – Russia and Romania – dominated Moldovan politics during the 20th century. Moldova next experienced a period of independence in 1918, in the course of the Russian Revolution, and then voted to become part of Romania. However, the Soviet Union objected and brought it within the Soviet orbit. It was then occupied by Soviet forces in 1940 under the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact. The German invasion of the Soviet Union put Moldova back under Nazi control; a brief period of unification with Romania followed before the Red Army overran it in 1944.

BRIEF HISTORY
The territory of Republic of Moldova encompassing an area between Prut and Nistru Rivers and the Black Sea was populated in ancient times by geto-daci tribes. In the 1 st Century B.C. the first state of geto-daci was established by Burebista (82-44 B.C.) who was a remarkable strategist, military man, organizer and diplomatist. By the middle of 1 st Century B.C. this state established itself as the main political and military power in Central Europe. However, being involved in conquest wars waged by the Roman Empire, the state created by Burebista soon following the death of the latter fell to the Romans. Decebal, Burebista’s successor killed himself and this territory was transformed into a Roman colony. Throughout the first millenium B.C. Moldova was populated and successively inhabited by different migratory people such as: Goths, Huns, Slavs, Bulgarians, Hungarians, etc. Following the Tartar invasion (1242) the whole region becomes politically controlled by the Golden Horde. The first independent Moldovan State was established in 1359 by Bogdan I and comprised the territories between the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Nistru River, Black Sea and Danube. The fact that Moldova Principality was at the confluence of Russia, Austria and Turkey which disputed the supremacy in South-Eastern Europe, largely explains the territorial rupture subsequently carried out by large imperial powers.

In the 18th and 19th centuries the Jews in Bessarabia mainly engaged in local commerce and liquor distilling; some traded on a considerable scale with neighboring countries. In the villages main occupations were leasing activities and innkeeping. In the cultural sphere, Bessarabian Jewry in this period was not advanced. The most prominent rabbis of the early 19th century were Hayyim b. Solomon of Czernowitz, rabbi of Kishinev, and David Solomon Eibenschutz, rabbi of Soroki. Jacob Frank exerted an influence from Podolia, and Khotin became a center for Frank and his adherents. Toward the end of the 18th century Hasidism penetrated Bessarabia.
