The location of present-day makes it a historic passageway between Asia and southern Europe as well as the victim of frequent warfare. Greeks , Romans, Huns and Bulgars invade the area, which in the 13th century becomes part of the Mongol empire. An independent principality of Moldavia emerges briefly in the 14th century under celebrated leader Stefan the Great, but subsequently comes comes under Ottoman rule in the early sixteenth century. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, the eastern half of Moldavia (Bessarabia) between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers is ceded to Russia , while Moldavia west of the Prut, remains with the Turks. In 1918 a council of state proclaims independence from Russia as the Moldavia n Democratic Republic. This republic is later that year incorporated into Romania . The USSR doesn't recognize the action and creates an autonomous Moldavian republic on the east side of the Dniester River in 1924. In 1940 Romania is forced to cede Bessarabia to the USSR, which establishes the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic by merging the autonomous republic east of the Dniester and the annexed Bessarabian portion. Romania seeks to regain it by joining with Germany in the 1941 attack on the USSR. Bessarabia is ceded back to Moscow when hostilities between the USSR and Romania cease at the end of World War II. In 1990 Mircea Snegur is elected president of Moldavia by the parliament. A former Communist Party official, he endorses independence from the USSR and actively seeks Western recognition.

This piece of land boasts a rich history, abundant in dramatic and agitated events.
From the XIV century it was a part of the Moldova Principality, situated between Oriental Carpathians and the Nistru river, in the north bounded by Hotin, and in the South – by the Low Danube and the Black Sea.
Following the Peace concluded in Bucharest, in 1812, a part of this territory was asigned to Czarist Russia, which called it Basarabia - an older name, earlier attributed to the southern part. The aim was to identify this territory as a separate geographic entity from the Moldova Principality.
The Independence of the Democratic Republic of Moldova was proclaimed in January 1918. And later, on March 27 1918 it was decided to re-unite it with Romania. The next annexure process took place in 1940, following the Molotov - Ribbentrop summit. According to this Basarabia became part of the USSR and was proclaimed as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia. It comprised only nine Basarabian counties and six districts from the left bank of the Nistru River. The present territory of Moldova is smaller compared to the area attributed to Russian authorities in 1812, since the North Hotin, Acherman and the southern Ismail were given up in 1940 by the Soviet authorities to Ukraine.

Historical Romanian-Speaking Regions in Southeastern Europe During the second half of the fifteenth century, all of southeastern Europe came under increasing pressure from the Ottoman Empire, and despite significant military victories by Stephen the Great (Stefan cel Mare, 1457-1504), Moldova succumbed to Ottoman power in 1512 and was a tributary state of the empire for the next 300 years. In addition to paying tribute to the Ottoman Empire and later acceding to the selection of local rulers by Ottoman authorities, Moldova suffered repeated invasions by Turks, Crimean Tatars, and Russians. In 1792 the Treaty of Iasi forced the Ottoman Empire to cede all of its holdings in what is now Transnistria to the Russian Empire. An expanded Bessarabia was annexed by, and incorporated into, the Russian Empire following the Russo-Turkish War of 1806- 12 according to the terms of the Treaty of Bucharest of 1812 (see fig. 14

Early History Ancestors of Moldovans(Romanians) was the Thracian tribes of the Gets and Dacians . Numerous archaeological traces have been discovered including defense works, burial places and religious cult constructions between the Dniester and the Prut rivers, dating back to as early as the 4th century B.C. The Hellenistic influence can also be traced in the material culture of the Gets and Dacians. Later, at the time of the Great Migration of Nations, tribes of Kimmerians, Scythians, Sarmathians, and, finally, the Huns, passed through that land known as The Gate between the Carpathians and the Black Sea. After the Roman conquest of this territory in the second and third centuries A.D., the local population was romanized. Nevertheless, this contact area allowed the nomadic East (the Pecheneg, Polovets and Tatar-Mongol tribes) to meet the settled Western peoples with their organized agriculture. The first document referring to the Land of Moldova dates back to 1 360 A.D . In 1391 A.D., the ethnic group Moldovans was mentioned for the first time and, by the year 1402 A.D., written statements about Moldovan Lands appeared. The peak time in the formation of the medieval Moldovan state situated between the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea was the rule of

It contains specialised units, palliative sections in the oncological institute, palliative care units in hospitals and polyclinics, homecare programmes and hospice foundations … [but] the programmes are without state financing … The current situation is disastrous.' Nevertheless, despite these difficulties, 'The lack of palliative care in our country and the big number of cancer patients at the advanced 4th grade initiated the idea of the introduction of palliative care in Moldova and made our specialists begin the work in this domain.' This led to the creation of the 'Hospice Angelus' in the capital Chisinau, Moldova, which was legally registered in August 2001 and began its home care service the following month. A day care service is scheduled to begin in September 2003 and it has plans for an inpatient unit in a building which has been made available by the mayor of the municipality.

I n late winter, the countryside of tiny and largely forgotten ex-Soviet Moldova looks a bit like the aftermath of Stalin’s scorched earth policy during the retreat from the Germans in World War II. The low rolling hills are covered with barren orchards and untended vineyards, the higher peaks dusted with dirty snow. In endless rows, short shrubs reach up out of the ground like the ghastly twisted claws of once-angry, now-dead subterranean trolls, and the abandoned fields range in color from brown to gray to almost black. Dotted around the wasteland are small villages that look mostly empty as you drive through them. Occasionally, a local inhabitant can be seen trudging along the side of the road carrying heavy sacks, wearing a facial expression of half-anger, half-confusion. Children in grubby clothes, mangy dogs, and other stray animals run around in the softening mud. Amid the gloomy squalor and desolation, a billboard for Western cigarettes may rise suddenly out of nowhere, depicting young and ostensibly fashionable glamour pusses sitting at a disco bar laughing their heads off.

History : Moldova's Latin influence arises from its position on the fringes of the Roman Empire between AD 105 and 270. Over the next thousand years, the region variously came under the control of Huns, Ostrogoths, Magyars and Mongols. The Hungarians were in occupation when, in 1349, Prince Bogdan established an independent principality (hence its original name of Bogdania before its present title, taken from the Moldova River in modern-day Romania). In 1512, the Ottomans moved in and more or less kept hold of the territory for the next three centuries. As an imperial border state (once again), Moldova was subject to frequent incursions by neighbouring powers, mainly the Russians who finally took over Moldova in 1792 under the terms of the treaty of Iasi.
By 1861, Moldova had assumed its present form, including the sliver of land known as Transdnistria, to the east of the Dniester River and stretching east as far as the Romanian border (the territory went through more divisions, reallocations and occupation in the period up to 1945). The decision to ally with one or the other of its two more powerful neighbours ? Russia and Romania ? dominated Moldovan politics during the 20th century. Moldova next experienced a period of independence in 1918, in the course of the Russian Revolution, and then voted to become part of Romania. However, the Soviet Union objected and brought it within the Soviet orbit. It was then occupied by Soviet forces in 1940 under the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact. The German invasion of the Soviet Union put Moldova back under Nazi control; a brief period of unification with Romania followed before the Red Army overran it in 1944.

It is strategically located at the crossroads between Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe, and is one of the newly independent European states (the smallest, in terms of territory, after Armenia). Situated between the Danube, Prut and Nistru (formerly spelled Dnestr) rivers, the Republic of Moldova occupies a territory of 33,700 sq. km/13,000 sq. miles - 350 km from North to South and 150 km from east to west. It borders Romania in the west and Ukraine in the east and south.
Throughout its history Moldova was subject to frequent invasions and changes. In the course of the 16th century, it fell under Turkish suzerainty but its eastern part was annexed by Russia in 1812, after a Russian-Turkish war. Most of this area remained under Russian control until 1918.
