Tours and Related Services Visa Information Moldova : History The history of Moldova is complicated by the fact that the republic's present-day territory was not called Moldova or Moldavia until 1940. Present-day Moldova occupies the central two-thirds of a region historically referred to as Bessarabia. For centuries the name Moldova referred to a larger area encompassing Bessarabia and stretching from the Black Sea in the south to Bukovina, a former province of Romania, in the north, and from the Siret River in the west to the Dnestr in the east. Established in the 15th century, Moldova has a long history of foreign domination. It fell under Turkish sovereignity in the 16th century, and part of the north was added to the Austrian Empire in the 18th century. From 1812 to 1856 Russians occupied the eastern portion of Moldova, which they named Bessarabia. After Bessarabia was returned to Moldova in 1856, Moldova and Walachia were united to form the Kingdom of Romania in 1859. The territorial integrity of the new Romanian state did not last long, however. In 1878 Russian forces reannexed Bessarabia, which remained part of the Russian Empire until 1917. In March 1918 the Bessarabian legislature voted in favor of unification with Romania, and at the Paris Peace Conference in 1920 the union was officially recognized by the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other western countries.

The Republic of Moldova occupies most of what has been known as Bessarabia. Moldova's location has made it a historic passageway between Asia and southern Europe as well as the victim of frequent warfare. Greeks, Romans, Huns, and Bulgars invaded the area, which in the 13th century became part of the Mongol empire. An independent Moldovan state emerged briefly in the 14th century under celebrated leader Stefan the Great, but subsequently fell under Ottoman Turkish rule in the 16th century.
After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, the eastern half of Moldova (Bessarabia) between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers was ceded to Russia, while Romanian Moldova (west of the Prut) remained with the Turks. Romania, which gained independence in 1878, took control of the Russian half of Moldova in 1918. The Soviet Union never recognized the action and created an autonomous Moldavian republic on the east side of the Dniester River in 1924.
In 1940, Romania was forced to cede eastern Moldova to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.), which established the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic by merging the autonomous republic east of the Dniester and the annexed Bessarabian portion. Romania sought to regain it by joining with Germany in the 1941 attack on the U.S.S.R. Moldova was ceded back to Moscow when hostilities between the U.S.S.R. and Romania ceased at the end of World War II. The present boundary between Moldova and Romania was established in 1947. Moldova remained part of the U.S.S.R. until the early 1990s; the Soviet Union was formally dissolved In December 1991.

    About Moldova (part 2)
About 30% of the national products fall on agriculture. The warm temperate climate and abundant sunshine coupled with the fertile soil, provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of different cereals and crops: corn, sunflower, wheat, sugar beet, soy beans, tobacco, peppers, apples, tomatoes and grapes.
The most important spheres of industry are manufacturing industry, light industry, mechanical engineering and building materials production.
In spite of difficult economical situation of the country bound up with the transition period in economy in Moldova, for the first time during the ten years of crisis the gross national products increased in 6,1% in 2001.
Moldova is very famous for its various handicrafts - especially carpet weaving, carving and fretwork, lace and ceramics. The earliest traces of these handicrafts were observed in extreme antiquity. For instance, there was an old tradition when bride had to weave carpets by her own because they consisted her dowry.
The main wealth of Moldova of course are people - hard working, assiduous, hospitable and never given up. Moldavian proverb says, "Life was worth living if you built a house, brought-up a son, planted a tree and dug a well". That is why Moldavian villages are plenty of verdure and practically everywhere you can see lots of wells along the roads. One who wishes can make a stop to taste its cool fresh water.

Files on the history of Bessarabia / Moldova still have to be written.
In the Middle Ages and Early Modern History, what is Moldova today formed part of the Duchy of Moldavia, together with the region on the west bank of the Pruth River, the latter since 1858/61 being part of Romania.
From 1512 to 1878, Moldavia (since 1858/61 Romania) was tributary to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1812 the Ottoman Empire ceded Bessarabia, i.e. the lands between Pruth and Dnjestr Rivers, to the Russian Empire.
In 1918, Romania annexed Bessarabia; within the Soviet Union , on the right bank of the Dnjestr, a tiny Moldovan ASSR was founded in 1924, autonomous within Ukraine until 1990. In 1939 the USSR annexed Bessarabia, and the Moldovan ASSR reached her present size. Moldova gained independence on December 30th 1991, when the USSR disintegrated.

Moldova (formerly Moldovia) became an independent democratic republic in May 1990. In 1979, Moldova had a Jewish population of 80,100, a decade later declined to 65,800, with the majority of Jews residing in Kishinev. History In the 15th century, Sephardic Jewish merchants began using Bessarabia (a region that today includes Moldova) as a trade route between the Black Sea and Poland . Bessarabia is the region between the Dniestr and Prut rivers. Jews settled in the region, prompting a growth of communities in northern and central Bessarabia. Jewish communities were found in southern Bessarabia in the 16th century. By the 18th century, several permanent Jewish communities had been established in urban developments. In the 18th and 19th century, Jews were very involved with local trading as well as liquor distilling. The rabbis of the communities prior to 1812 were Hayyim b. Solomon of Czernowitz, rabbi of Kishinev, and David Solomon Eibenschutz, rabbi of Soroki. By the end the 18th century
