Country Info Moldova Introduction Moldova General Data Moldova Maps Moldova Culture ... Moldova Time and Date Moldova History Back to Top Moldova's Latin origins can be traced to the time of Roman occupation of nearby Dacia,ca. A.D. 105-270, when a culture was formed from the intermingling of Roman colonists and the local population. After the Roman Empire and its determine waned and its troops left the region in A.D. 271, a number of groups passed through the area, often violently: Huns, Ostrogoths, and Antes. The Bulgarian Empire, the Magyars, the Pechenegs, and the Golden Horde (Mongols) also held sway temporarily. In the 13th century, Hungary expanded into the area and accomplished a line of fortifications in Moldova near the Siretul River and beyond. The region came under Hungarian suzerainty until an independent Moldovan principality was accomplished by Prince Bogdan in 1349. Originally called Bogdania, the principality stretched from the Carpathian Mountains to the Nistru River and was later renamed Moldova, after the Moldova River in present-day Romania. In 1792 the Treaty of Iasi forced the Ottoman Empire to cede all of its holdings in what is now Transnistria to the Russian Empire. An expanded Bessarabia was annexed by, and incorporated into, the Russian Empire following the Russo-Turkish War of 1806- 12 according to the terms of the Treaty of Bucharest of 1812. Moldovan territory west of the Prut River was united with Walachia. And in the same year, Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected prince of Walachia and the part of Moldova that lay west of the Prut River, laying the foundations of modern Romania. These two regions were united in 1861.

      History
A historic passageway between Asia and S Europe, Moldova was often subject to invasion and warfare. It is historically part of a greater Moldavia, the main part of which was an independent principality in the 14th cent. and came under Ottoman Turkish rule in the 16th cent. It became a highly fortified Turkish border region and was a frequent target in Russo-Turkish wars. East Moldavia passed to Russia in 1791. Russia acquired further Moldavian territory in 1793 and especially in 1812, when the Russians received all of Bessarabia (the name for the area of Moldavia between the Prut and Dniester rivers). The rest of Moldavia remained with the Turks and later passed to Romania, which seized Bessarabia in 1918.

    History
THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA is the history of two different regions that have been joined into one country, but not into one nation: Bessarabia and Transnistria. Bessarabia, the land between the Prut and Nistru rivers, is predominantly ethnic Romanian in population and constitutes the eastern half of a region historically known as Moldova or Moldavia (the Soviet-era Russian name). Transnistria is the Romanian-language name for the land on the east bank of the Nistru River; the majority of the population there is Slavicethnic Ukrainians and Russians although Romanians are the single largest ethnic group there. To a great extent, Moldova's history has been shaped by the foreigners who came to stay and by those who merely passed through, including Greek colonists, invading Turks and Tatars, officials of the Russian Empire, German and Bulgarian colonists, communist apparatchiks from the Soviet Union, soldiers from Nazi Germany, Romanian conationalists, and twentieth-century Russian and Ukrainian immigrants. Each group has left its own legacy, sometimes cultural and sometimes political, and often unwelcome. Moldova's communist overlords, the most recent "foreigners," created the public life that exists in Moldova today. Independence has brought about changes in this public life, but often only on the surface. What further changes Moldova makes will depend partly on how much time it has before the next group of "foreigners" comes to call.

    History
Under Ottoman yoke set up in Moldova in the middle of the XVI century, constant incursions of the Turks and Crimean Tatar, increase of duties, the town development had been happening slowly and the country was in decay. Firstly being a boyar and since 1641 a monastic patrimony, Kishinev was repeatedly destroyed. The first remaining scheme of Kishinev refers to the beginning of the XIX century. It testifies about the fact that the town in the middle of the XIX century constituted the assemblage of dirty pise houses with reed roofs without firmly determined districts and streets. In the photograph there is a sight at the town from the side of an embankment along future Renastere Avenue. The Bik was partitioned off with dams with mills and mechanisms for skin processing and leather manufacture. Over the dwelling part of the town swarms of flies and gnats were hovering. The Bik used to frequently overflow. The puddles and bogs were the consequence of winter flood and autumn rains. The planned building of the town was begun in 1818. In 1834 the government adopted a general plan of the Kishinev development. From 1829 till 1834 wells, that provided the most part of the population with water, were improved in Kishinev. At the expense of the Town Council (Duma)

    History
    The Fountain
In XIX century, by the hill, the Mazarache church is towering on, by the bank of the river of Bik, once there was a fountain, supplying the whole Kishinev with water. The ancient fountain is worth restoring (even more so, because it is a zone of rest with alleys and parks) and cleaning in order to the city-dwellers could enjoy the crystal water again. Firstly this spring with the water, suitable for drinking, was mentioned in a gospodar document dated 17 July 1436. In other words, the fountain was simaltaneously mentioned with Kishinev itself. The ancient document reads, that Moldovan gospodars Ilie Voevod and his brother Stephen Voevod presented logofet Vanca several villages, mills and apiaries for the faithful service... near the Bik, on the side of the river that leads to Chishinat Albasa by the well, where there is a Tatar settlement not far from the forest. Probably, the history originates from here, because fountains have their own history like churches, villages and towns. It is not excluded, that the fountain had existed before that date - we only cited to the most ancient document, being preserved. In the past, the Kishinev dwellers, according to doctor N.A. Morosanu, who published a number of articles on this theme in mass media ("Viata Basarabei", NN 5-6, 1936), used the water from the Bik and springs, located in the town territory. The drinking water was taken from the water-pump, called "fontal" by everybody. According to the contemporaries, water was received from 40 outfalls and several wells.
