Romanian/Moldovan is the language spoken by the majority of the people there except in the breakaway region of Transdniester, where they are outnumbered by Russian and Ukrainian speakers. Now pro-Moscow separatists in Transdniester have begun closing schools that teach in Romanian/Moldovan. The move has sparked protests by teachers and students, as well as strong criticism from the EU and the OSCE, which is calling the closures "linguistic cleansing."
Prague, 30 July 2004 (RFE/RL) Tensions have risen sharply since authorities in the mainly ethnic-Russian Transdniestr region began closing schools teaching in the Romanian/Moldovan language earlier this month.

of Moldova Background:
Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II.
Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Nistru (Dnister) River supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, who have proclaimed a "Transnistria" republic. One of the poorest nations in Europe, Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a communist as its president in 2001.

The Communists took 46% of the vote, but lost ground to the opposition Democratic Moldova bloc and the Christian Democratic Popular Party. The Communists will have enough seats to pass laws but will not be able to elect the next president on their own. They used to be pro-Russian but now want closer ties with the EU. Tensions with Russia overshadowed Sunday's poll. Russia shunned The Moldovan authorities accused Russia of trying to influence the ballot. On Saturday, 100 Russians who said they were election observers were barred from entering the country. President Voronin has distanced himself from Russia International observers said the elections broadly met international democratic standards. But the election "fell short of some key commitments, particularly regarding campaign conditions and media access," said the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
