An examination of the social and cultural significance of body art by a major new voice. The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in body art, in which the artist's body is integral to the work of art. With the revoking of NEA funding for such artists as Karen Finley, Tim Miller, and others, public awareness and media coverage of body-oriented performances have increased. Yet the roots of body art extend to the 1960s and before. In this definitive book, Amelia Jones explores body art projects from the 1960s and 1970s and relates their impact to the work of body artists active today, providing a new conceptual framework for defining postmodernism in the visual arts. Jones begins with a discussion of the shifting intellectual terrain of the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on the work of Ana Mendieta. Moving to an examination of the reception of Jackson Pollock's "performative" acts of painting, she argues that Pollock is a pivotal figure between modernism and postmodernism. The book continues with explorations of Vito Acconci and Hannah Wilke, whose practices exemplify a new kind of performance that arose in the late 1960s, one that represents a dramatic shift in the conception of the artistic subject. Art Deco
Popular decorative design style of the 1920s and 1930s. The name is taken from the exhibitions of Les Arts Decoratifs , where such work was first exhibited. Cubist painting and African and Native American art influenced the development of Art Deco, but the polished, dynamic forms of modern machinery and aircraft were most inspirational. The style is characterized by stepped forms, rounded corners, triple-striped decorative elements, and the use of chromium and black trim. Important practitioners of the style have included (in America) Donald Deskey and Gilbert Rohde . The style was popular for restaurants, theaters, hotels, ocean liners, and Worlds Fair exhibitions, as it did not have the serious theoretical underpinnings that modernism or Bauhaus styles encompassed. The architecture and interiors of the Chrysler Building and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel (both in New York) are good examples of Deco design. List of all terms. Bakelite
Trade name of one of the first plastics to come into wide use. A phenolic invented in 1907 by chemist Leo Baekeland, the material is a good insulator against heat and electric current, can easily be molded in varied shapes, and is relatively inexpensive. The colors are usually limited to browns and blacks.

DAVID ANTIN Professor Emeritus
David Antin is a poet, critic and performance artist. His background includes undergraduate work in science and languages with graduate work in linguistics at New York University (special project was the language structure of Gertrude Stein). He has edited and translated several science and math books and has pursued a career as a poet since 1955 and that of an art critic since 1964. He also served as the Educational Curator for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston before joining the Visual Arts Department in 1968. For four years he was Director of the UCSD Mandeville Art Gallery, assembling exhibitions of post-Pop representation (Katz, Morley, Estes, Wesselman), a video piece by Keith Sonnier, an installation piece by Richard Serra, and a performance by Joan Jonas, as well as a large group show of artists from the Fluxus group. Antin began full-time teaching in 1972 and his courses cover such areas as the Structure of Art, History of Criticism, Tactics and Strategies, Theories of Modernism and Postmodernism, and Narrative Theory. His published books include Definitions Autobiography Code of Flag Behavior Meditations Talking After the War (A Long Novel with Few Words) Talking at the Boundaries Who's Listening Out There Dialogue Tuning Selected Poems 1963-1973 (1991) and What It Means to be Avant Garde (1993). To address several threads from the last two weeks
Modernism and postmodernism are not only markers for periods of art,
literature, and architecture. When these terms do mark periods, they do so
differentially depending on the object, and depending on the cultural context
itself. As the list has pointed out, modernismsand avant gardisms of
various sorts (futurism, dada, surrealism)mark different periods based on
which language and cultural context it specifies: Brasileiro, French,
British, Italian, North American, African and so on, and within the confines
of a national literature (or art tradition), one can also specify subcultures
with unequal and differential developments. Modernism and postmodernism have also both been value markers. At one time literary critics, for instance, spent prodigious energies articulating the

    "Class is intrinsically impossible," says Lacan. But if the dialectic paradigm of consensus holds, we have to choose between neodeconstructive discourse and Lyotardist narrative. The characteristic theme of Wilson's critique of social realism is the role of the reader as writer. In the works of Madonna, a predominant concept is the distinction between feminine and masculine. Therefore, Sartre promotes the use of neocultural capitalist theory to challenge capitalism. The premise of social realism holds that context comes from the masses. But the main theme of the works of Madonna is not, in fact, conceptualism, but preconceptualism. Finnis suggests that we have to choose between neocultural capitalist theory and the capitalist paradigm of reality.
