Modern Pentathlon
The modern pentathlon was introduced at the 1912 Olympics as a test of military skillsor, at least, the skills that were traditionally taught at military academies of the time. It was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the chief founder of the modern Olympic Games. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall. Scoring was originally based on a competitor's placing in the various events, with the lowest score winning. It's now based on a scoring table similar to the one used in track and field for the decathlon. Standards are set for each event and a competitor receives 1,000 points for equalling the standard. Points are added if the standard is exceeded and subtracted if the performance falls below the standard. The events have changed somewhat since 1912. The equestrian event, originally a 5,000-meter cross-country ride against time, is now a 400-meter stadium jumping course. The swimming event has been cut from 300 meters to 200 meters, the cross-country running event from 4,000 meters to 3,000 meters. The shooting event, originally a 22-caliber pistol shot from 25 meters at a turning target, has become a 10-meter air pistol shot at a stationary target.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern pentathlon believing the event would test a man's/woman's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, thereby producing the ideal, complete athlete. The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport which consists of competition in five events in one gruelling day. Competitors earn points for their performances in each of the five disciplines: pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, riding (equestrian show jumping) and cross-country running. The total points scored in the first four events determine the starting order for the final event, turning the cross-country running into a handicap event. The leading competitor sets off first and the intervals between that competitor and those who follow is determined by the points difference between them. Because of this handicapping system, the first three competitors to cross the line at the end of the run fill the gold, silver and bronze medal positions.

The Modern Pentathlon consists of five events - Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Show Jumping and Running. The event is said to reflect the experiences of an unfortunate Swedish soldier, who had to fight with pistol and sword after being dismounted from his horse, before he swam across a river and ran to safety. Origins
The Modern Pentathlon was created by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, who devised the competition to find the best-all round athlete in the Games. Olympic Heritage
Modern Pentathlon has featured in every Games since 1912, though the event was made considerably harder in 1996 it was decided to contest all of the events within a single 12 hour period. The Modern Pentathlon is the only Olympic sport that was created specifically for the Games. Sport at Heart

The sport of Modern Pentathlon has been called the "true Olympic sport" and the "sport that most accurately conveys the ideals of Olympism." History and the Father of Olympism
In the Ancient Games, 2700 years ago, the Pentathlon was the competition showing the best and most complete athletes. The Greek philosopher Aristotle is quoted as stating: The most perfect sportsmen, therefore, are the Pentathletes because in their bodies strength and speed are combined in beautiful harmony. Modern pentathlon was created by Pierre de Coubertin and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the sport is the only sport created solely for the Olympic Games, and has been included in every Olympic Games since 1912. As in the Ancient times, it was designed to capture the true spirit and essence of the Games. A complete and well-rounded athlete represents the ideal complete and well-rounded person that Pierre de Coubertin hoped to promote when he revived the Olympic Games. Modern Pentathlon is the only sport that was created in its entirety by the IOC, as the Ancient sports were created by the Ancient Greeks. All other sports existed outside of the IOC or joined the Olympic Movement after having existed independently.

What they found was, shall we say, interesting. The shortcomings used to justify the removal of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon three years ago exist to varying degrees in 11 other sports: canoe-kayak, archery, rowing, wrestling, shooting, judo, handball, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo and fencing. Even more are still open to question.
There is right now in the IOC a massive lobbying effort underway as federations plead with IOC members to support their sport in Singapore. This is far more than Jacques Rogge ever bargained for when he started this process. More on that later.

On the differences of holding all five events in one day: “It’s a big challenge for us…also it’s much tougher for them to compete mentally because they have only 30 or 40 minutes to change from one event to another. So it’s much tougher now than before. It’s also more difficult because they need faster recovery so it’s definitely required different training and different preparation than in the old days.” On marketing his sport: “I really believe the pentathlon is the most difficult sport. I really think it’s up to the media to give us more attention and more help so we can survive. I think this sport is the only sport from Pierre de Coubertin himself and it’s not only physically difficult but mentally and a lot of media doesn’t understand our sport because they don’t go.
