OLYMPIC M. PENTATHLON
OLYMPIC MODERN PENTATHLON They call it the 'Modern Pentathlon' to distinguish it from the one which, for some 900 years, was a feature of the ancient Olympic Games and consisted of four athletic events and wrestling. The word 'pentathlon' comes from Greek, 'penta' meaning five and 'athlon' equals contest. This is a most demanding sport. An athlete has to be good to very good at target shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running in order to succeed. Today's modern pentathlon entered the Olympic program in 1912, largely as the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin, who saw this sport as the supreme test of versatility and felt it was an ideal sport for army officers. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. And so it was: the sport gained quick acceptance especially in Sweden and Finland and for the first 30 years or so, only military personnel took part. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall.

Origins

The sport of modern pentathlon simulates the trials of a military courier charged with delivering a message by horseback through hostile territory. After he loses his horse, the messenger defends himself with pistol and sword, swims a river and runs across country to accomplish his mission. Thus, the sport's five events are shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, asked that modern pentathlon be includeed in the 1912 games in Stockholm. De Coubertin wanted to revive the spriit of the pentathlon of the ancient Greeks. The ancient pentathlete wrestled, ran the length of the stadium, jumped and threw the spear and the discus. Competitors with a military background have dominated the modern pentathlon.
The Sport
The overall winner of the five-phase modern pentathlon competition is the athlete who crosses the finish line first at the end of the run, having accumulated the most points.
  • Pistol shooting
Air pistols are used to fire 20 shots at centre fire targets, 155mm in diameter, at a range of 10m. Competitors have 40 seconds to fire each shot. Targets are changed after each shots and a score of 172 out of a possible 200 is worh 1,000 points. Every target point above or below 172 is worth plus or minus 12 points.

Senior, 29, finished second in the 3,000-meter cross-country run with a time of 9 minutes, 35.76 seconds. It was the last of five events that included pistol shooting, fencing, swimming and equestrian riding.
Russia's Andrey Moiseev won the gold medal. Lithuania's Andrejus Zadneprovskis took the silver medal. Czech Republic's Libor Capalini claimed the bronze. Team USA's Vakhtang "Vaho" Iagorashvili finished ninth.

    45. The Unknown Factor In Sport's
Of all the olympic sports, it is perhaps the modern pentathlon that tests the true grit of an athlete. When a horse has attracted the selection committee’s

The pentathletes are about to mount horses they know nothing about, with just 20 minutes to warm up, before tackling double and treble jumps and 10 other obstacles in the showjumping event. It’s the least predictable and most challenging of the pentathlon sports. The highly tuned athletes not only rely on their own skills and fitness – they are also at the mercy of an unknown element: a horse. The temperament and ability of the horse is an extremely important factor in the competition. The person given the task of selecting horses for the event therefore plays a crucial role. For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, that job is in the hands of Shannon O’Meara, who arrived at Charles Sturt University’s (CSU’s) Wagga Wagga Campus in March as Head Trainer. As the official supplier of equine services to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, CSU will accommodate and manage 20 horses to be trained for the Olympic competition at its Equine Centre.

IOC puts off decision on ditching sports
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) postponed a vote on dropping modern pentathlon, softball and baseball from the Olympics on Friday following emotional pleas by the leaders of the three sports. After debating a controversial report on scaling down the Olympic programme for the 2008 Beijing Games which proposed the exclusion of the three sports, an IOC session decided to put off any final decision until after the 2004 Athens Olympics. The IOC has not thrown a sport out of the Games since 1936. In a 2 1/2 hour-debate the majority of members said the organisation needed more time to study the issue in detail before making a final ruling. The decision means that it will be impossible for new sports to join the 28-sport programme in the near future. The IOC had been considering adding rugby union sevens and golf to the Games but had already announced that it would only add a sport if the session decided to drop others from the programme. But it also means that a cloud will hang over the three sports in the next two years which could affect their relationships with sponsors and also influence youth development.

Five Facts Full Schedule Overview The main aim of the modern pentathletes in Athens is to keep their sport on the Olympic programme after it narrowly escaped being excluded at an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in 2002. The sport has tried to adapt to television demands by running all five components on the same day and by introducing a handicap system, ensuring that the first three across the line in the final cross-country race win the medals.

Egypt did reasonably well in a modern pentathlon championship in Cairo. Nashwa Abdel-Tawab explains why A modern pentathlete championship saw Egypt perform admirably, and not without reason. For the first time in Egypt's history, a sport is being run by a board of directors consisting solely of ex-players of the sport they are supervising. And it has paid off. Ahmed Nasser, a former pentathlete champion in the mid- 80s, is chairman, not of officials per say, but of a group of friends and champions in the game who love the sport and have pledged to work for its welfare. Thus the competition enjoyed an ambiance of friendship. "We love the game and we want it to flourish in Egypt," Nasser, head of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF), said. "We want the players to concentrate on playing without bothering themselves with other thoughts. We will do what's best for them because all of us [the board of directors] were players and we know and understand what they need." The board, selected by the Ministry of Youth two months ago, has concentrated almost solely on the players. And that was reflected in the games. The Egyptian pentathletes achieved better than average results in the 23rd Egypt International Pentathlon Championship for men and women and the fifth Open African Championship. Omnia Fakhri came second in the women's individual event. Emad El-Geziri came fifth in the men's event. Both Egyptians won the title of the African Champions since the tournament is the fifth Open African Championship as well.
