It was introduced to the ancient Olympics in the eighth century BC after the Spartans complained that too many Olympic events favoured civilians and did nothing to reward the skills of the warrior. In those days the sport was an elimination event featuring five disciplines: discus, spear throwing, long jump, running and wrestling. The idea was that weaker competitors were progressively eliminated until just two remained to wrestle for the title. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympics, obviously liked the idea and was keen to incorporate a similar event in the Games.

Other Resources The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Wrestling Modern pentathlon Modern pentathlon is another event that takes its origins from the Olympics of ancient Greece thousands of years ago. There are five different bits to it, and the athletes have to do all five of them in a single day which can be very tiring. Pentathletes earn points for each of the first four events in the competition. In the final event those points are converted to times. Those times then determine in which order the runners start the final event and the one with the most points starts first. The athlete with the next most points is second, third-most third and so on. The gold medallist is the first person home, no matter how many points they have. The five events are: Shooting - competitors use a pistol to fire 20 shots at a target 10m away. Each shot is marked out of 10, making a maximum score of 1,000 points. Swimming (200m) - athletes can use any stroke they want. Their points are worked out by their times. For men, two minutes and 30 seconds is 1,000 points and for women two minutes and 40 seconds earns that many. Faster means more points, slower means less. Fencing - competitors fight each of the others. Each fight lasts a minute. Whoever hits their opponent first wins. If neither manages a hit they both lose. If they win 70% of their bouts they get 1,000 points. More wins means more points, less wins means fewer points.

Pierre de Coubertin wished to include a combined sport into the programme of the modern Olympic Games, which would highlight the prototype of the multi-faceted “super athlete”, someone who combines strength, technique and a strong personality. Inspired by the ancient Pentathlon, he created the Modern pentathlon, a sport that combines technical disciplines such as Shooting, Fencing and Riding, together with strength and endurance disciplines like Swimming and Cross-country running. The choice of these sports was based on the legend of a liaison officer who, having to convey a message to the rear of the fighting forces, had to battle on horseback with his pistol and sword. However, because his horse was killed in the process, he had to swim and run to complete his mission.
