Pentathlon Pentathlon History
  • The discus throw area was very small and barely sufficient for an individual to stand erect. The discus to be thrown weighed around 14 pounds, 10 ounces. The ancient Greek javelin was 6 feet long and as thick as a finger. It was made of wood and contained a metal point at the end. A throw strap was wrapped in the middle to provide the participants a better grip. Long jump was accompanied by carrying weights. Contestants carried stone or metal weights of four to eight pounds during long jumps. There were four categories of foot races.

Robert Marbut Jr. '82 Fights to Save
The Modern Pentathlon
By Anne Dullaghan
To better appreciate the evolution of the pentathlon, search history's battlefields: A military officer, attacked while delivering a message on horseback, fells his opponents with pistol and sword. Having lost his horse during the exchange, he is forced to swim the width of a river and run the remaining miles to his post. Inspired by such heroic displays of skill and strength and building on the ancient Greek pentathlon, modern Olympic founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin had an idea: parlay the physical demands of a cavalry officer into a new competition in which its contenders must excel in a combination of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and cross-country running. These modern warriors, he surmised, would be the finest athletes of the Games. Millions of spectators of the 2004 summer Olympic Games in Athens this August will be unaware that the pentathlon might have been doomed, if not for the actions of Robert Marbut Jr. '82, chair of the United States Olympic Committee's National Governing Bodies Council, which coordinates the activities of all 45 Summer Olympic, Winter Olympic, and Pan American sports.

Compiled by Ian O'Riordan 1. Introduction Despite many popular misconceptions, very few of the events featured in the modern Olympic Games can be traced directly to the ancient Olympiad. Some of the ancient events, such as trumpeting, have, thankfully, been long since forgotten, while others, such as the pankration, a vicious combat sport, were, mercifully, never revived. Even the oldest events such as the javelin, the discus and wrestling originally featured only as part of the pentathlon. And many of the so-called traditional events were added much more recently. Graeco-Roman wrestling, for example, in fact originated in 19th-century France, and was seen as a reincarnation of ancient Greek and Roman wrestling. Up until 200 BC various sports were added to the Games to the point where the Olympiad consisted, in its final form, of 16 events. The ancient Games, from their foundation in 776 BC to their demise in AD 393, lasted 1,169 years. This means 292 Olympiads were staged.

Making Olympic History: 2000 Sydney Games New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

1912 Olympic Games
The 1912 Olympic Games was held in Stockholm. It was acclaimed as the best organized games so far and set the standard for decades to come. The Swedes introduced the use of electronic timing devices for track events. It was also the first Olympic Games to make use of a public address system.
New events included the modern pentathlon, along with swimming and diving for women. Boxing was illegal in Sweden and therefore could not take place. Stockholm was the scene of the longest race in Olympic history: the 320 kilometers (199 miles) road race. The winning time was 10 hours 42 minutes. Another event, a Greco-Roman wrestling match between Martin Klein of Estonia and Alfred Asikainen of Finland lasted for over eleven hours. Klein won this contest but was so exhausted that he was unable to take part in the final. Hannes Kohlemainen of Finland won three gold medals in long-distance running. 5,000m, 10,000m and the 12,000m cross-country race. This including the breaking of two world records. Ted Meredith won the 800m in the world record time of 1.51.9. This world record lasted for the next 14 years. Another record was obtained by Gottfried Fuchs who scored ten goals in a football match against Russia.

The modern pentathlon has 5 parts: 800 meters horse-riding, swordfencing, pistole-shooting 25 meters, 300 meters free stroke swimming and a 4km cross-countrywalk. That order is at each Olympics the same.
The points the participants can get was for 1956, that your rank is your point (number 1 = 1 point, 2 = 2 points, etc.). After that, the points are giving by an international table.

MODERN PENTATHLON REPORT Back to NEWS Monday, October 2 Cook seeking wider horizons for pentathlon From David Powell in Sydney Steph Cook, who became the first women’s Olympic champion of her sport here yesterday, will seek to add the second most important title to her laurels next July when the world championships are staged at Millfield, close to the high performance centre in Bath where she prepared for the Games. Kate Allenby, the bronze medal-winner, will join Cook in an attempt to position Britain indisputably as the leading women’s nation. In the three years since Cook began to compete internationally, she has accumulated an impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medals from world team and team relay championships. Small wonder that Allenby, who helped to campaign for women modern pentathletes to be admitted to the Olympics 88 years after the men were added to the programme, is now calling for a team event to be put on the schedule for Athens in 2004. The Olympic programme covered individual events only, whereas world championships incorporate team and team relay events. “The world championships are in Britain next year, so we have something to prove,” Allenby said. “We want to see a team event in the next Olympics because we have five girls in the top 20 in the world at the moment.” Based on rankings, Georgina Harland was worth one of the 24 places in the women’s Olympic field here, but each country was restricted to two competitors. However, Harland was brought here for experience and as a training partner for Cook and Allenby.
