"You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes in mens Ancient Olympic chariot races. Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. 1900 was the year the World Exhibition was scheduled to take place in Paris, with celebrations and events akin to our own Millennium celebrations. The Olympic Games were taking place at the same time, from 14th May to 28th October and were considered by many to be part of the World Exhibition. Some of the competitors did not know if they were in the Olympic Games or the World Fair. Happily for the women athletes of the time, the all male International Olympic Committee, who were very against women taking parts in sports, had little influence in Paris.
The organisers of the World Exhibition seemed unconcerned about the rights and wrongs of women competing, so their presence was not an issue. To this day there is still confusion as to which events were Olympic and which were World Fair events. So, who were the first female Olympic competitors and champion? For a sport to be Olympic in 1900 it had to be an open sport, amateur and international, not handicapped and not motorised. The long-held view was that women took part in just

Modern Pentathlon
Organization Competitions Events The Pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. The Pentathlon held a position of unique importance in the Games and was considered to be the climax, with the winner ranked as "Victor Ludorum". Admiration for the ancient Pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the Modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and he expressed his support for the concept of Pentathlon most eloquently and forcefully in his Memoires Olympiques published in 1931. From 1909, he tried to have the event re-introduced into the Olympic program and after two failed attempts, Pentathlon's moment came at the 14th session of the International Olympic Committee in Budapest (HUN) 1911, when as the Baron stated:
"the Holy Ghost of sport illuminated my colleagues and they accepted a competition to which I attach great importance" The Modern Pentathlon
The Modern Pentathlon, introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm (SWE) 1912, comprised of the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, embraced the spirit of its ancient counterpart. It was De Coubertin's belief that it would be the event, above all others, that "tested a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete.

Old Sport Now One Day Event

Modern Pentathlon is the most drastically restructured of all the events at the Atlanta Olympics. The traditional five-day event, catering for riding, fencing, shooting, swimming and running, has been severely restricted in size and reduced to a one-day competition. And for these Olympic Games at least there will be no teams event. Only 32 athletes will be allowed to compete, on the basis of strict selection guidelines. Australia has no athletes who qualify on merit, but will profit from the guarantee of one competitor from each of the five Continents. It is almost a matter of course that the representative from Oceania will be an Australian. The onus on the Australian Pentathlon Union to select a representative is very difficult, as athletes competing in lesser competitions can amass higher scores in some cases than athletes competing in elite competitions like the Olympic qualifiers. The two front runners for Australian selection were 24-year-old ex-Canberran Alex Johnson and 25-year-old Paul Christensen of Queensland.

Poster for the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp The Summer Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event held every four years, organised by the International Olympic Committee . The Olympics are the most prestigious of such events in the world, featuring a larger range of sports than others. Olympic victory is widely considered to be the most prestigious achievement in sports. Medals are awarded in each event, with gold for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a tradition which started in 1904. Competitors are entered by a National Olympic Committee NOC ) to represent their country of citizenship. National anthems and flags accompany the medal ceremonies, and tables showing the number of medals won by each country are widely used. In general only recognised nations are represented, but a few non-sovereign countries are allowed to take part. The special case of Taiwan was handled by having it compete as Chinese Taipei , to avoid the issue of Taiwanese independence. Though the most diverse sporting event in the world, the Olympics are perhaps not the most popular. The

Sept. 8, 2004 Colonials Pursue Olympic Dreams Athletes Return from Athens By Rachel Muir
Fast forward four years. In Athens, Abdullah, along with double sculls partner Henry Nuzum, advanced in an Olympic semifinal race with a margin of victory that made the 2000 trials seem like a rout when they edged out a Norwegian duo by .01 second. (After a protest from the Norwegian team, the race was deemed a dead heat and both pairs advanced to the finals.) Abdullah and Nuzum went on to finish an impressive sixth overall.

Senior explains that the US Modern Pentathlon Committee got its hands on a letter that he, as a high school student, sent out to colleges, inquiring about their athletic programs and detailing his accomplishments in swimming and running. The committee invited him to a development camp the summer after his sophomore year even though he had little or no experience in the other three disciplines.
Four years ago in Sydney, Senior led the Olympic field after three events. A medal seemed all but certain, especially since his worst event, fencing, was behind him. But when his horse botched four jumps, Senior placed 18th in the horseback riding portion and finished sixth overall. Frustrated, he took a two-year hiatus from the sport.

The pentathletes are about to mount horses they know nothing about, with just 20 minutes to warm up, before tackling double and treble jumps and 10 other obstacles in the showjumping event. It’s the least predictable and most challenging of the pentathlon sports. The highly tuned athletes not only rely on their own skills and fitness – they are also at the mercy of an unknown element: a horse. The temperament and ability of the horse is an extremely important factor in the competition. The person given the task of selecting horses for the event therefore plays a crucial role. For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, that job is in the hands of Shannon O’Meara, who arrived at Charles Sturt University’s (CSU’s) Wagga Wagga Campus in March as Head Trainer. As the official supplier of equine services to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, CSU will accommodate and manage 20 horses to be trained for the Olympic competition at its Equine Centre.
