General description
Involvement in the hobby can range from the possession of a train set to spending many hours and large sums of money on a large and exactingly executed model of a railroad and the scenery through which it passes, called a "layout". Hobbyists, called "model railroaders" or "railway modellers", may even maintain models large enough to ride (see " Live steam " and " Backyard railroad "). Model railroaders may find enjoyment in

I enjoy model railroading - HO scale thank you. I build modules that vary in width anywhere from 1 foot to 3 feet, with lengths ranging from 3 feet to 8 feet. Each module has a separate setting (even different decades). I have completed a switching yard, a small industrial park, and a farm scene. The common thread is that all modules are connected by a mainline that runs through them all. In this way I can easily move freight from module to module, and also run one train continuously around the basement, while jockying another in its particular setting. Narrow Gauge HO

Electrical Circuits you can make!

One thing I have tried to do is not show a schematic drawing. I feel that this scares many people away from electronic projects. For those who know how to read a schematic, please do not feel insulted. Also, please note that the color codes on the resistors in any of these drawings are not accurate - the descriptions are, but the color codes in the pictures are not. Also, if you have a favorite circuit, send me a copy and I'll try to include it here.

Model Railroading
You would have to call me an "armchair" model railroader. I had a train layout when I was a kid; American Flyer. You KNOW what I'm going to say next! "I sure wish I had kept it!" But when I went away to college, none of my brothers were interested, so it got sold. I even let my subscription to Model Railroader magazine lapse. And I had it since 1959! After I finished school and settled down I bought some HO stuff (Old Time trains), resubscribed to MR, and built some kits. I'd set up a small portable layout under the christmas tree, for the kids. But, as you know if you came here to see the tractors, the little toys have to move over to make room for the BIG toys! But I still get the magazine, and reading it makes me feel like I am still participating in the hobby; even if it's just in the "armchair" capacity. Now the portable layout is back, (in a simplified form) for my grandson! I still claim that someday I'll build a permanent layout, but don't hold your breath waiting to be the first to see it! If you know about model railroading I don't have to tell you about Model Railroader magazine. If you'd like to know more about it, please visit their website at:

Except Holidays Welcome to Elmhurst Model Railroad Club, home of the Illinois Western Railroad. We have both HO and HOn3 layouts depicting a nostalgic look at life as it was in the Midwest in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Scenes vary from rolling hillsides and farms to a large steel mill. You can also experience real life railroading right outside our front door. We are located just west of the former Chicago and Northwestern Proviso yard, now UP's busiest mainline track. Trains pass by at about 20 minute intervals. You can safely watch trains both day and night. Layouts are only a part of the club's total picture. The club's constitution states "The purpose of the club shall be to encourage the building and operating of model railroad layouts for members use and for exhibition. A secondary purpose shall be to encourage friendship and to promote the hobby of model railroading." In addition, we regularly have activities like club picnics, auctions, parties, slide shows, movie nights, video nights, visits to and from other model railroad clubs, and fan trips.

Sscale model railroading
An explanation of the difference between scale and gauge in model railroading, an area of common confusion with beginners to the hobby.
One of the areas of the hobby of model railroading that confuses the most people, is the whole topic of scale vs gauge. People generally aren't too particular about how they use these terms, and even experienced hobbyists often use them incorrectly, thus confusing any beginners who are listening. This article will attempt to simplify and clarify the two very different concepts of Scale and Gauge. Let's start with scale. The scale of any model, be it a train, ship, human figure, or doll house, is nothing more than a mathematical representation of the ratio of that model to the real object it represents. For instance, if you were to make a life size model of a human head out of clay, it would be said to be a 1:1 scale model. If it were only half the size of the real head, then it would be a 1:2 model. Sometimes these ratios are expressed as fractions (i.e. 1:1 would be written 1/1, 1:2 would be 1/2, etc.) Normally, with model trains, people don't model in 1:1 scale, as they just can't fit them in their basement! Modelers do use this term sometimes, however. When you hear a model railroader say that "Frank works in 1:1 scale", then this is their way of saying that Frank works on a real railway, and "plays" with real trains. So scale represents the ratio between the size of the original object, and the size of the model that is made to represent it. This is important: Scale doesn't necessarily have ANYTHING to do with how wide the model rails are set apart! This statement may seem strange, but you'll see what I mean. There are many different scales that are used for model railroad models. The most popular scale is 1:87 (or 1/87 of life size), which is commonly known as "HO Scale". Next most popular is 1: 160 scale, which is called "N Scale". Other common scales are "Z Scale" (1:220), "S Scale" (1:64), and "O Scale (1:48).

http://www.grmrhs.org/
Quick Links The Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society was established for the purpose of promoting and preserving the hobby of model railroading, the history of railroads and railroading in the Grand Rapids area and providing a forum for the exchange of information about railroads in general. It is a goal of the Society to construct an operating scale model railroad "layout" to illustrate the history of the area railroads in a three dimensional form. This layout has been designed to represent the Pere Marquette Railroad, circa 1945, as it existed between Grand Rapids and Bay View, Michigan (known as the Petoskey Sub Division). Baldwin and Ludington, Michigan (known as the Ludington Sub Division) and plymouth, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois. We would like to welcome you to the home of the Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society where we are in pursuit of our goal. The structure was built by the state of Michigan in 1914 and used as a fish hatchery by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Fingerlings, placed in milk cans were picked up by passing trains (the Petoskey Sub Division passes within 30 feet of the building) to be dumped into rivers and streams along the northern portions of the line as the trains crossed these bodies of water on the bridges and trestles. The state turned the facility over to Kent county in the mid `50's and they continued operations until the mid `70's when they decided to use the building for assembling wooden picnic tables. After 1986 the building was used strictly as a storage facility.

The MRRC commissioned local modeler Dennis Kirchmann to construct a scale replica of the grand structure as it was designed; this page features photos of the model taken during and after construction, along with a number of photographs and diagrams that were used during the modeling process. Projects Most things revolve around building the new layout. This includes building the frame of the subfloor and adding floorboards to completed sections, as well as moving building supplies and modules from the existing modular layout around the room. A related project of equal importance is adding casters to the modules so they can be rolled underneath the subfloor. There are numerous car and building kits which need to be assembled. There are also several DCC decoders which need to be tested and installed in locomotives.
