Frameworks for power simulations Supply Chain Builder Industry SDI's software frameworks were designed to build simulations for real world situations. SDI has long been recognized as a leader in innovative software solutions for complex models, but first and foremost we are a simulation company. Our software development and research has been a direct outgrowth of the need for tools that work for us. Our software supports the development and use of simulations with an extraordinary level of detail. Our Supply Chain Builder models, for example, have been used to simulate the production and distribution of tens of thousands of SKU codes over vast distribution networks - all in the same model. Discrete event modelers will discover new power and flexibility with the discrete-rate (flow) architecture toolsets and data capabilities of SDI's Industry product, an extension to the popular Extend simulation software. http://www.protodesign-inc.com/doc/SGfeat/object-oriented_model_build.htm
Object-Oriented Model Building User Extensible Unit Conversion Reduce redundant data entries with multi-level assemblies.
Creating Project Model
Simulation users create Project Models and run simulation programs in the SansGUI Run-Time Environment. A project model is created based upon one of the installed simulators' Object Library, distributed by the simulation developer. On-line, context-sensitive manuals, if supplied by the developer, can be accessed conveniently.
Organizing Objects, Parts and Links
In a Project Model, the model data are organized with objects, and its topographical configuration of parts and links in assemblies. The user creates objects by deriving them from the classes (model building blocks) defined by the simulation developers. The user then places parts and connects them with links on a drawing canvas. These parts and links are derived from common objects analogous to the "Parts List" metaphor in real life products and systems. For example, a user can create a 4"x2"x10' wood stud as a component object and derive many parts (instances) from it. All parts will be initialized with the data from the object. This mechanism greatly reduced the data entry task which no longer requires the user go through each and every part and enter their properties. As shown in the illustration, the class tree (left-right) and the assembly tree (top-down) are "fused" at the leaf nodes (object and parts).

course online!
This course provides participants with the opportunity to construct actual quantitative risk assessment models, while providing more in-depth training in the complexities and practicalities of quantitative methodologies. Building on knowledge from the Probabilistic Methods course, Quantitative Methods: Model Building The course is conducted in a computer teaching laboratory. Lectures describe various techniques. Students then work individually or in groups to solidify their understanding of the lecture materials, and to begin to build quantitative skills. We strongly recommend Introduction to Food Safety Risk Assessment and Quantitative Methods: Probabilistic Methods as prerequisites to this course.

Abstract
While important efforts have been undertaken to advancing understanding of probability using technology, the research herein reported is distinct in its focus on model building by learners. The work draws on theories of Constructionism and Connected Mathematics. The research builds from the conjecture that both the learner's own sense making and the cognitive researchersâ investigations of this sense-making are best advanced by having the learner build computational models of probabilistic phenomena. Through building these models, learners come to make sense of core concepts in probability. Through studying this model building process, and what learners do with their models, researchers can better understand the development of probabilistic learning. This report briefly describes two case studies of learners engaged in building computational models of probabilistic phenomena.
Introduction
As part of the Connected Probability project, we have extended the StarLogo parallel modeling language (Resnick, 1992; Wilensky, 1993) and tailored it for building probabilistic models. The StarLogo language is an extension of the computer language Logo that allows learners to control thousands of screen "turtles". These turtles or computational agents have local state and can be manipulated as concrete objects. Through assigning thousands of such turtles probabilistic rules, learners pursue both forwards and backwards modeling. Forwards modeling involves exploring the effects of various sets of local rules to see what global pattern emerges, while in backwards modeling learners try to find an adequate set of local rules to produce a particular global effect. In this report, two case studies of probabilistic modeling projects are presented.

Creative Design Model's new website will be online shortly. Latest News - document.write(doClock("W1",",%20","D1","%20%20","M1","%20","Y0")); OK, this site is undergoing a bit of a facelift right now - it needs a major overhaul but I just can't stand seeing 'site under construction' banners, so this will have to do for the time being. CDM have had a very busy 10 months....
We did some great ads for the CAT system in Perth, display cases filled with multicolored balls and popcorn + some hyper-real pigeons. ARCHITECTURALLY speaking we made a 3.8m tall onion dome for an Indian Restaurant - it had 9 segments [the full one will have 18] was 2.8m in dia and was a complete headache full of compound curves... I love Pi...Then we gold leafed it and installed it 4m in the air. [I didn't even get a free curry] KALGOORLIE MUSEUM got the CDM team in to make hyper realistic [monotonal] Gold Miners for their Museum, absolutely beautiful! [no mannequins @ this model shop]. CADBURYS display project was a stressful one but looks brilliant, funny thing is 7 year olds love it and 70 year olds look perplexed. The whole job looks like a mini Willi Wonka factory, the experience CDM gained on that means we can now offer fully mechanical displays.

This course aims to develop students' knowledge of the theory and practice of building causal econometric models for real-world application. Effective modelling requires a deep understanding of economic data, familiarity with a number of model design principles and an awareness of commonly-met construction problems and how to overcome them. These themes are discussed in sequence, in the context of two diverse applications. The presentation emphasises practicalities, rather than formal rigour.

Abstract prepared by Chuck Downing, PhD
The idea of modeling or model building is a topic at least touched upon in nearly all science classrooms. The effectiveness of model building as a learning device depends on how effectively student embrace the true meaning of "modeling." Most students believe that "science" consists of observing and recording-scientists make observations and accurately record those observations. According to student perceptions, keeping complete records is the key to scientific discovery. Students also believe that observing is "non-participatory"-models to them are copies of physical phenomenon. However, most working scientists are model builders-their lives tend to be dominated by building and testing models. Scientists know that models channel observations and drive interpretations. For the purpose of this paper, models can be defined in two ways:
