Newsletter of the missouri Center for Safe Schools May 1999. FROM THE DIRECTOR .. . COMMUNICATING WITH THE media DURING A CRISIS
http://www.umkc.edu/safe-school/documents/may99nl.html
MISSOURI SAFE SCHOOLS Newsletter of the Missouri Center for Safe Schools May 1999 FROM THE DIRECTOR . . . Governor Carnahan has established a task force to review the issues of school violence in Missouri. The members of this task force have begun their work by attending the first of five public hearings throughout Missouri. In addition to relating problems which have been faced in Missouri schools, it is expected that these hearings will result in valuable information about positive programs/processes which are occurring in Missouri and which will benefit more communities by sharing them. This task force is one of two important activities which the governor has set in motion. The second is the establishment of a committee under the direction of the Missouri Department of Public Safety and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education which has been given the task of preparing a model crisis response plan. This committee represents a wide variety of experts from around the state and should result in a collaborative plan which will be of great use to school districts and their respective communities throughout Missouri. I am impressed by the collaborative nature of both of these activities. Until we recognize that school violence is a community issue and must be addressed by the entire community, we will not be able to effectively deal with it. In view of this belief, the districts which have begun the work of implementing the Missouri Violence Prevention Curriculum have done so through community collaborations. I continue to be impressed with the quality planning which is occurring in these districts and congratulate them for agreeing to serve as pilots for this important work.

College students will have more than their fair share of choices when picking their PCs for the upcoming school yearassuming their universities are copacetic with the systems they haul to campus. PC makers such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Sony and Toshiba are cramming entertainment features into their laptops and desktops in order to offer a one-stop shop for productivity, entertainment and communications. Apple Computer also has entertainment features built into its Mac OS X operating system, which powers its iBooks, PowerBooks and various desktop models. However, universities aren't nearly as multimedia-happy as PC makers and take a more conservative tone when establishing PC purchasing guidelines for students. Many are recommending laptops over desktops, and several are asking for the more established Windows XP Professional OS or Mac OS X over the next-generation operating systems.

Centers for Excellence in Cancer Communication Research
The Centers for Excellence in Cancer Communications Research initiative is the centerpiece of NCI's Extraordinary Opportunity in Cancer Communications. The Request for Applications (RFA) used the P50 grant mechanism to invite applications for Centers that include three or more individual, hypothesis-driven research projects and a pilot or developmental research project process, cores, and plan for career development. The novelty and scope of this initiative reflects the enormous potential of cancer communication to improve health, and NCI's recognition that effective communications can and should be used to narrow the gap between discovery and application and to reduce health disparities among our citizens. Details of the projects being done by the four centers are available below. St. Louis University School of Public Health
The School of Public Health
holds the distinction of being the only school of public health in Missouri, and the only school of public health in the United States sponsored by a Catholic college or university. Another significant feature of the School was its early and continuing recognition of the need to establish strong ties between the School and the practice communities in cities and counties, the state and the nation.
