Welcome to the Captioned Media Program
The Captioned Media Program (CMP) is a free loan service, much like your local library. The only difference is that CMP loans captioned videos and DVD’s to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. The CMP is funded by the U.S. Department of Education for selecting, captioning and distributing captioned media materials. These materials are open captioned (You need no special equipment to use them. Just put it in the VCR/DVD player and press play. The captions are embedded in the tape.) and loaned free of charge to deaf and hard of hearing persons, their families, teachers, interpreters and anyone who works with deaf and hard of hearing persons. There are no age restrictions. We have videos for Kindergarten through adult. These videos include educational titles, self-help videos, classic movies, as well as special interest (crafts, hobbies, etc.) and theatrical titles.
To use this service, all you need to do is request an account number. It’s a free loan service, using the postal service to get materials to you. We pay the postage, and include in the shipment a pre-paid return label. Many of the educational titles also include a lesson guide. There are more than 4,000 titles to choose from. What are you waiting for? Get an account number and start ordering! Please give us 10 days to 2 weeks to get your media to you. We mail materials “Library Rate” and it takes a bit longer than regular mail. If you want to plan a special event, you can reserve your video/DVD far in advance of the event.

Missouri School for the Blind Guidelines for Lending Library Media Center Materials to Missouri Schools The APH Librarian works with the School Librarian to lend materials to Missouri Schools upon request when MSB students, faculty, or staff are not using the materials. MSB lends the materials to teachers or other school staff for use by their students. The school’s teacher or other staff member is responsible for returning the book on time and in good condition. When a request is received, if the material requested by the school is not available from the APH Materials Center (APHMC) Library, the APH Librarian may see if it is available from the MSB Library Media Center). The APH Librarian gets permission from the School Librarian on a case-by-case basis to lend materials. The School Librarian takes into account the number of copies held, circulation history, class assignments anticipated, subject area holdings, and rarity and replacement value of materials. The APH Librarian or the School Librarian may choose not to fill a request if the requesting school has a poor materials-return record. Materials are eligible for loan according to this table: Eligible Ineligible Large type - All circulating Tapes (Audio and Video) Braille - All circulating Reference Materials CD-ROMs Kits Professional Library Materials Regular Print Materials Picture Books Periodicals A dual checkout system is used: one for APHMC and one for the LMC.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
This page contains links to research reports and other documents that show that school libraries make a difference to student achievement; that school libraries have a positive impact on students and on learning. There are documents from a number of countries. There are also links to articles in professional journals and newspapers that are based on these documents. This page is intended to help school librarians to answer the question, "Do school libraries make a difference?".
    School Libraries Work!
This is a Research Foundation Paper published by Scholastic Library Publishing; it brings together research findings from almost ten years of school library-related research. The preface notes, "A substantial body of research since 1990 clearly demonstrates the importance of school libraries to students' education. Whether student achievement is measured by standardized reading achievement tests or by global assessments of learning, research shows that a well-stocked library staffed by a certified library media specialist has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community."

This work is in the public domain Missouri issues ID numbers to pupils
    By Carolyn Bower
    Of the Post-Dispatch
Missouri is assigning a 10-digit identification number to its public school students, from the 34 in tiny Wyaconda, Mo., to the more than 37,000 students in the St. Louis Public Schools. The ID numbers will allow educators to track students from preschool through high school.
So far this summer, nearly two-thirds of the numbers have been assigned. By January, well ahead of testing time next spring, Missouri expects to have IDs assigned to nearly all of the state's 905,000 public school students.
That will allow officials to save money and collect more accurate data by precoding test booklets with student information. It will provide a way to track students and their scores year to year, even if they move to other schools and districts. It also could help answer questions about how many students should be counted as dropouts.
