    Win 16 Awards in SND Contest
    Columbia, Mo. (May 10, 2005) The Society for News Design chapter at the Missouri School of Journalism recently hosted the annual College News Design Contest. The contest is a college version of SND's international competition. Judges looked at more than 750 entries from around the country and selected winners in daily and non-daily divisions. Categories covered news, sports, features and Web site design, photo spreads, information graphics, magazine design, redesigns and use of color and photography. Among the daily newspapers, the most awards went to the University of Missouri, with 16. Ball State University received 10, and nine went to Michigan State University. "In Mizzou's design and graphics classes, students learn to think visually. Design isn't about making things pretty. It's about understanding stories well enough to present them in an exciting, informative way. Good design is good journalism. It's awesome to see our students' good work recognized," said Joy Mayer , design editor for the Columbian Missourian The winners, their categories and where the winning entries were published are:

    Danita Allen and her husband bought and revived Missouri Life in 1999. Since then, it has won three awards from the International and Regional Magazine Association for excellence in design and for reader service and historical stories. She served as the Meredith Chair for Service Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism for nearly 10 years, from 1995 to 2005. At Missouri, she taught advanced editing, publishing, writing or reporting classes, and she has lectured at Folio: and other magazine conferences around the country. Before teaching, she spent 15 years with Meredith Corporation, the publisher of and other magazines. While there, she was the founding editor of Country America , which reached a million paid circulation and was named by the industry as one of the Five Best Magazines of 1991 and to the "10 Hottest Magazines" list for three years. John O. Bell
    President/CEO, The Ovid Bell Press, Inc. John O. Bell is the third generation of this family-owned publications printing company in business since 1924. Born and raised in Fulton, Mo., John Bell began working in the plant as a teenager and joined the business in 1973. He became President in l989 and worked along side his father, Ovid Bell, until he died in l998. During that time the press made dramatic technological strides and now boasts a fully digital prepress, on-line soft proofing, in support of heat-set web presses.

He has directed the Pictures of the Year competition and co-directed the Missouri Photo Workshop for the past 14 years. Kuykendall has also served as photo editor of the Seattle Times, and the Worthington Daily Globe and as a freelance photographer, designer and consultant. Honors include POY Newspaper Editor of the Year, the International Association of Business Communicators Gold Quill Award, and the NPPA Robin F. Garland Teacher of the Year Award. Kuykendall holds an MA degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Minnesota and a BA in zoology from West Virginia University. Kuykendall accepted a position this fall with the University of Maine as director of New Media.
    DUANE DAILEY
    DENNIS DIMICK
    has been an editor at the National Geographic Society since 1980. Before that he worked at the Louisville, KY, Courier-Journal, and three newspapers in the Pacific Northwest. He holds a masters degree in agricultural journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor¹s degree in agriculture from Oregon State University. He has picture edited a dozen National Geographic books, most recently a 1996 book on the Endangered Species Act called ³The Company We Keep.² He has received several awards in the University of Missouri/NPPA Pictures of the Year Competition, including First Place twice for Magazine Team Picture Editing Portfolio, and in 1999 an award for best use of pictures in a book. He has served as on-site masters project advisor for University of Missouri journalism graduate students Melissa Farlow and Sarah Voisin. This is Dimmick¹s fifth year on faculty.
