29. Searching The Library Catalog
Why are missouri libraries Shown First on the List? Since the EdenWebster LibrarySystem subscribes to this database through a cooperative arrangement in
http://library.webster.edu/wbt/t-p1-06.html
Accessing Other Library Catalogs
You may want to expand your search for books beyond the Eden-Webster Library System catalog. Through the Passports website, you can connect to and search other library catalogs. In an earlier section, we saw how you could search the MOBIUS catalog to find items available at Missouri academic libraries. You may also search individual library catalogs or try a database called OCLC WorldCat that searches records from many libraries at once, including ones outside of Missouri.
Searching Individual Catalogs
From the Passports home page, follow the link to Libraries Worldwide . You will find links to St. Louis area libraries and sites that link to libraries elsewhere in the country and the world. A good site for accessing other libraries worldwide is LibWeb On the same "Libraries Worldwide" page is a link to Local Library Information for Webster University Extended Campuses . There is information on local libraries in extended campus areas and in many cases, links to the catalogs of those libraries. Many of those libraries extend services to Webster University students through arrangements with the local site office.
Searching Multiple Libraries At One Time
OCLC WorldCat is a database that lets you search the holdings of many libraries at once. It has bibliographic records for books and items in libraries worldwide. Each record lists the libraries that own the item. Current Webster/Eden faculty, students, and staff may access OCLC WorldCat by going to the Passports home page (http://library.webster.edu) and following the link to "Online/Full-text Databases". Then look up the name of the database in the alphabetical list.

This is the main collection of anti-establishment and alternative press from the 1960s and early 1970s which provides a rich source of primary historical material for studying the development of the counter culture and anti-war movements, the civil rights, black and Chicano militant movements, the women’s liberation and gay/lesbian movements. This collection includes not only large circulation presses but hundreds of smaller publications by students, activists, radical scholars, revolutionary organizations as the Students for a Democratic Society, the Black Panthers, and Servicemen Opposed to Vietnam War. OCLC Group Services lets consortia package any combination of OCLC services to create a custom solution for their libraries. The latest offering: group catalogs
By Bob Murphy In 2003, OCLC launched a new initiative to help library groups control costs and serve users more effectively by getting the most efficient use of OCLC cataloging and resource sharing services. The group catalogs initiative requires no new investment in hardware or software by libraries and features unlimited use and fixed, subscription pricing of OCLC services. It also builds on the 30-year investment libraries have made in WorldCat and OCLC online services. Using a modular approach, each group selects and tailors the most appropriate build, search and share components to design a custom solution that best meets the needs of their libraries. To date, nine groups are using group catalogs.
The agreement includes unlimited searching of the Statewide Illinois Library Catalog (SILC), a customized group catalog created from bibliographic records and holdings information in WorldCat from Illinois libraries that gives Illinois residents access to the more than 66 million items held in libraries throughout the state.
