Missouri Geographic Alliance Lesson
OSAGE PRAIRIES
By Dan Hermann, Jefferson City High School National Geography Standards Show-Me Content Standards : SS 7, CA 6 Show-Me Performance Goals PREVIEW OF MAIN IDEA
This is a backward lesson plan. Instead of using the lesson plan to reinforce characteristics presented about the region beforehand, this lesson uses maps to introduce the characteristics of the region to students. Students will use maps to draw conclusions about the region of the Osage Prairies. This region has been described as the least distinctive area of the state, the region with the fewest distinguishing characteristics of Missouri. The Osage Prairies has neither the hills of the Ozark Highlands, nor the nearly flat relief of the Southeast Lowlands. The region was not uplifted like the Ozark Highlands, nor glaciated like the Northern Glaciated Plains. Yet the Osage Prairies still forms a distinctive region of our state, a region distinguishable on maps.
Maps are the basic tool of the geographer. In fact, maps may be called the "currency" of geography. If money, or currency, is the medium we use to exchange goods, then maps are indeed the currency whereby geographers exchange information. A love of maps has drawn many persons to the study of geography. Many people like to look at, to study maps. Thus, using maps is not the first of the eighteen new geography standards by accident. By using maps, students can gain a good understanding of the region of Missouri known as the Osage Prairies.

Jim Harlan

University of Missouri-Columbia The idea for the Lewis and Clark Historic Landscape Project came from Kenneth Winn, the Missouri State Archivist, who recruited Jim Harlan, a geographer, to create a historically accurate representation of the Missouri River. Harlan has been mapping Missouri's historic vegetation patterns for a decade. With information from the earliest land surveys and notes from the explorers' observations housed in the Missouri State Archives, Harlan of the Geographic Resources Center in the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Geography has used advanced computer technology (Geographic Information Systems or GIS) to create handsome maps of pre-settlement Missouri. This work permits viewers to see the Missouri River area as it was experienced by Lewis and Clark nearly 200 years ago. Harlan's intended audience is primarily middle schools and libraries. He avows that he does not create curriculum; rather he amasses data and makes it available for those who want to use it. But in addition to their visual appeal, the maps and GIS data provide potential learning tools for students to access a collection of information related to historical people and places, then to use this information for their own exploration and discoveries. Projects like the eMINTS Pioneers are using Harlan's maps and datasets to create inquiry-based learning units.

As the commemoration of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Missouri draws near, it is our goal that students of history understand the importance of the Corps of Discovery, as well as the significant role Missouri played in the Expedition and larger story of westward expansion. To this end, the Missouri State Archives, a division of the Secretary of State's Office, has been working for several years to promote research and publication on many important topics included in what is commonly referred to as "Lewis and Clark." Foremost among efforts is the Archives' commissioned Historic Landscape Project, in which the University of Missouri's Geographic Resources Center combined nineteenth century land survey records held at the Archives with modern mapping technology. The result is a singular series of maps covering both the Mississippi and Missouri river corridors, showing the natural landscape in the days when a vast western frontier was just beginning to be explored. Missouri's Lewis and Clark history is unique among the many trail states in that no other collection of contemporary records paralleling the time of the Expedition's passage exists. The Missouri State Archives subsequently requested that the Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet) and eMINTS program (enhancing Missouri's Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies) create curriculum units based on the historic landscape maps. The resulting lessons were developed for elementary, middle, and high school levels. The material is grounded in geography to awaken in students a greater awareness of the human need to define and describe the space around us, as well as an appreciation for the spirit of discovery as evidenced in the compelling drama of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Furthermore, each unit was designed to meet grade-specific Show-Me and MAP performance standards, and lessons within units are supported by detailed instruction, as well as evaluative rubrics for ease in analyzing student performance. Historical Background of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition Lower Missouri Region Table of Contents Early Maps Louisiana Purchase Clark's Map Historical Significance Little was known about the interior of North America west of the Mississippi River in the late 18th century. European and American explorers, military missions, and fur traders had penetrated into parts of the Missouri River basin, and many of the native Indian tribes had been contacted. Seafaring explorations had charted much of the Pacific coast. Geographic knowledge was nonetheless quite sketchy or completely speculative for the continental interior.
Early maps
Lewis and Jefferson had access to various maps to help their planning for the expedition of discovery. These maps were the results of several previous explorations by French and British agents during the 18th century. From the maps presented below, it is apparent that continental geography was relatively well known for the lower Missouri region from the Mississippi to the Mandan and Hidasta Indian villages in modern North Dakota. For the Corps of Discovery, there was, in fact, little to "discover" along the lower Missouri in terms of basic geography. The greater emphasis was placed on establishing favorable diplomatic relations with Indian nations along the way (Ronda 1984). The lower Missouri passage was also a time of testing the men, their equipment, and techniques in preparation for more arduous travels in subsequent years. Map of This map was issued as a result of the French and Indian War, and it depicts the state of geographical knowledge of the Mississippi basin as known in the middle 18th century prior to the American Revolution.
