Geography
The New Madrid Seismic Zone is made up of reactivated faults that formed when North America began to split or rift apart during the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia in the Neoproterozoic Era (about 750 million years ago). The rift failed, but remained as a scar or zone of weakness. During the Mesozoic Era (about 200 million years ago), as the Atlantic Ocean was opening in the east, rifting was once again re-activated and intrusive igneous rocks were emplaced. But again the rifting failed and the continent remained intact, although with a significant zone of weakness. This rift is known as the Reelfoot Rift and coincides with the northernmost portion of the Mississippi embayment . Most of the seismicity is located from 5 to 25 km beneath the Earth's surface.

Transfer Course Equivalencies
Updated February 2005 Following is a list of current course equivalents between Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; credit at NU is stated in semester hours. If a specific UNL course equivalent has not been identified, other notations are used.
  • GNCR; course transfers as UNL general hours
  • SUBJ; course transfers as subject area hours (e.g., ENGLXXX, MATHXXX) not assigned to a specific course
  • NDAP; excess transfer course hours which are included in the equivalency and generally not degree-applicable
  • VCRD; vocational/skill development course: limited application to a UNL degree
  • HSCR; course is high school or remedial level; hours and course do not transfer
Contact your UNL College to determine whether a course will be applicable to your intended major. While every effort is made to keep this list up to date, courses may be added or deleted at any time. Courses not listed may also be transferable and degree applicable. Equivalencies are date-specific and dependent upon when the course was taken. Equivalencies no longer in effect are not included in the list, but will be included in NU's evaluation of transfer credit if taken during the period the equivalency was in effect. In some cases, two or more transfer courses may be needed to achieve the equivalent of a UNL course. For an official evaluation of transfer credits, students are encouraged to apply for admission to NU, and submit complete high school and post-secondary transcripts. Begin your search for courses by selecting one of Northwest Missouri State University's subject abbreviations:

Reform Resumed
Although emphasizing relief, the state resumed its long-interrupted struggle against political corruption. Despite the direct primary laws, the state still had political machines. An outstanding example in the 1930s was the one run by the boss of the Kansas City Democratic Party, Thomas J. Pendergast. Pendergast’s influence declined after he broke with Governor Lloyd Stark in 1938, but it was not ended until 1939, when Pendergast was sentenced to prison for income tax evasion. One of the most notable products of the Pendergast machine was Harry S. Truman, a Jackson County judge, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1934 and elected vice president in 1944. With the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, Truman became the first Missourian to serve as president of the United States.

Missouri Higher Education Articulation Agreement
The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE) has adopted statewide general education goals to facilitate transfer among Missouri institutions of higher education. To that end, signatory schools have selected courses to meet these goals and to fit within the CBHE's 42-credit-hour core of general education. With completion of this "core" noted on their transcripts, students may transfer to participating Missouri colleges and universities, and this 42 credit general education core will be accepted as equivalent to the receiving institution's 42-credit core. Institutions may require transfer students to complete additional general education requirements beyond the 42-hour core when these requirements are also required of their native students. When UMKC students planning to transfer to another Missouri institution complete the 42 hour transferable core, they may go to the advising and student services offices in their academic units to apply for certification of completion of the general education core. Once completion of the core is verified, a statement will appear on the student's transcript. A student should apply for certification well in advance of requesting a transcript be sent to another Missouri institution. Please note that the CBHE core may not be as specific as the general education requirements for baccalaureate degrees at any particular institution. Students who intend to complete their degrees at UMKC must complete the general education requirements of the specific bachelor's degree they wish to earn. Similarly, students transferring to UMKC whose transcripts do not certify their completion of the core at another institution must complete all the general education requirements of the UMKC degree they wish to earn.
