Welcome To Benton County
Missouri
Benton County was created 1835. North of the Osage River came from Pettis County,
south of the Osage from Greene County. In 1841, a northwest section was returned to
Pettis County, and Niangua Township became part of Kinderhook (Camden) County.
The north half of Hickory County was formed from southern Benton County in 1845,
and the boundaries of Benton County Mo have remained unchanged since that time. ( Townships are shown on the 'Benton County 1930' map - see below )
My name is Homer R. Ficken and I'm the Benton County host. If you would like to contribute

    Welcome to the
Dinwiddie Home Page
Origins and Immigrants
Dinwiddie is an old and honorable name. This statement is meant to include the uncounted variations in spelling, some of the more frequently seen of which are Dunwoody, Dunwoodie, Dinwoody, Dinwiddy, and Dunwody. In old official documents the same man sometimes has his name spelled in more than one way. Consistency in spelling is a modern innovation.
The Dinwiddie's were a border clan, long chief proprietors in the parish of Applegarth, Anandale, Dumfries-shire. Their earliest known chief was Alleyn Dinwithie whose name is found on the roll of Scotsmen (for some unknown reason called "Ragman's Roll") who submitted on honorable terms to Edward I at the time of his invasion of Scotland in 1296. A later chief, Thomas, was killed in the Dinwiddie Tower by the Jardines in 1503, and the Jardines were credited with slaying the Laird of Dinwiddie in 1512 in the streets of Edinburgh. In 1547 the Laird of Dunwoody with forty-four followers was recorded as among those who gave allegiance to England.
Wonderful site by James Warr on The Dinwoodie's of Scotland Definitely not a site to miss. Has several names in databases with surnames that have connected to the Dinwoodie line.

MISSOURI FAMILY HISTORY
EVERYONE, PLEASE NOTE

Everyone, family historian or not, is urged to speak with the old folks in his or her family, make and save careful notes, and caption the pictures in their family album. When the old folks help with the captioning, they tend to recall many elements of family history. Often, people of working age are unable to devote the time needed for family-history research in libraries and archives, but usually only younger people have the opportunity to learn from the old folks while the old folks are able to remember.
Anyone who seeks to learn of his or her family history is urged to join their local genealogical or historical society very early in his or her research, and, unless all their ancestors are from one limited area, also join a regional or state society. Of course, I recommend the Missouri State Genealogical Association, for which please see the links below.
OLD MISSOURI VITAL RECORDS MUST BE OPENED
Many, many Missourians are keenly interested in family history. However, some are impeded by a problem that exists with regard to the State Vital Records Office and which, indeed, would exist in any similar situation.
It is appropriate to keep certain vital records private for a reasonable time. So, when the State assumed the keeping of vital records in 1910, there was no immediate need to provide for opening of the records. But 90 years have passed.

55. Genealogy Helplist
Volunteers who do missouri genealogy look ups
http://helplist.org/usa/mo.shtml
The Genealogy Helplist is currently unavailable
19 November 2004
I apologize for the recent state of the Genealogy Helplist.
For the last two years the Genealogy Helplist has been unmaintained. Volunteers are currently listed with outdated email addresses, many are still listed who are no longer able to help, and the resources listed as available to volunteers have become inaccurate. Additionally, entire pages have gone missing as previous page maintainers have left.
Right now there are over 1000 requests for changes to the current site. This is more than the entire number of volunteers that were once listed on the site. It is unknown how many pages are no longer available. It is no longer feasible to bring the current site up to date.
I cannot provide an adequate excuse for this state of affairs. No one has maintained the site since my original volunteers stopped being able to do it. I am sorry.
At this point there are a number of options available. The easiest option would be to simply close down the service. I think this would be a shame since there are so many new offers to volunteer and so many who have written to say that they were helped greatly by this system. However, it would be better to close it down than to leave it in its current state. There are a large number of resources that did not exist at the time this site was started and a greater consciousness of the needs of amateur genealogists on the part of individuals and primary record holders.
The second option would be to turn it over to another organization to maintain. After watching the advent and development of companies such as Ancestry.com over the years I am loathe to trust another commercial interest with this site. There are, however, many organizations out there, and a number of them have made initial inquiries over the years. This would be a difficult thing for me to do, but also probably better than shutting down the site entirely.
