    Achieving self-sufficiency in rural America.
The lack of affordable housing, jobs and business development, and declines in funding for social welfare programs jeopardize the quality of life and community vitality in rural America. To help bolster and revitalize rural economies, Land-Grant universities and USDA work together to improve housing, community appearance, employment, business development, leadership skills and financial management techniques.

  • Strength in leadership. In Texas, Community Voices program taught 1,500 rural residents to develop their leadership skills. The curriculum also helps include Hispanics in the local culture. More than 45 high school girls trained in Community Voices formed the "Latinos for College" club to raise funds for higher education. Their efforts inspired their mothers to learn English, pass the GED and enroll in junior college. In rural Minnesota, many potential young adult leaders have left the area. To help this situation, Minnesota Extension taught leadership to more than 2,400 people. Program graduates are enhancing a statewide network for information and assistance in community planning.

Achieving Diversity and Pluralism: Our (Sad) Separatist Model
Dorsey, Maurice
How has the land grant college and university system met the challenge of diversity? Largely through a separatist model in which 1862, 1890, 1994, and HIS institutions serve their separate (and separated) targeted audiences. The Cooperative Extension System is unquestionably the finest educational infrastructure in the world. But how are we preparing for a future where there is no need for a divide-and-separate system? We're not. We must ask ourselves why. And we must do it together1862's, 1890's, 1994's, and HSI's.

THE MISSOURI BAR LOAN REPAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
FOR PUBLIC INTEREST ATTORNEYS Program Description Form Many people enter law school with a commitment to access to justice, but upon graduation, they find that they must forego their public interest aspirations, in light of their huge law school debt. According to a 2003 ABA report, law school tuition has more than doubled over the past decade, leaving law school graduates saddled with a nationwide average educational debt of more than $80,000. As costs, caseloads, and debt continue to increase, large debt burdens carried by law graduates have made it increasingly difficult for public interest and public sector employers to recruit and retain attorneys. As a result, low-income people and communities, already vastly under-served, may receive even less representation. Loan repayment assistance programs are an important means to address this problem. These programs cover, or at least defray, the educational debt payments of graduates engaged in qualifying public service. In 2004, The Missouri Bar and The Missouri Bar Foundation launched such a program, The Missouri Bar Loan Repayment Assistance Program (The Missouri Bar LRAP) The Missouri Bar LRAP expects to provide semi-annual awards of up to $2,000 to new lawyers entering public service, and to attorneys currently in public service. The Missouri Bar LRAP Advisory Board, which consists of lawyers from The Missouri Bar Board of Governors, The Missouri Bar Foundation Trustees, and The Missouri Bar Young Lawyers' Section, will make awards based on numerous factors including: the nature and location of employment, total income, assets, total debt, dependents, other loan repayment assistance available, educational or professional achievements and other special circumstances.

LOOKING FOR STUDENTS FOR INTERNSHIPS OR EMPLOYMENT?
WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL? SOCAP International has compiled a list of colleges and universities that offer programs that prepare students for careers in contact centers. Whether you are looking for students to employ or thinking of going back to school yourself, this list will be an invaluable resource and will make your search effortless. Here, we have gathered all the information in one place for easy access. This resource identifies both undergraduate and graduate programs that may be of interest for career enhancement or for getting the right level of education for the position. Customer Contact Centers are an area of increasing importance in business. The primary responsibility of contact center professionals is to champion the consumer's viewpoint to their employing organization and to convey information about the organization's products and services to the consumer. Students in these programs develop the ability to analyze issues from the perspectives of consumers, business and government and learn how to communicate these issues to management. This information can be used to learn about programs in higher education in order to hire new staff, and to send staff for further training. It is hoped that the report will assist in identification of programs in your vicinity, so you can consider development of a mentoring or consulting relationship. If there are other programs or institutions that are not included in the list, please contact SOCAP International so that they can be added.
