Facts about the Missouri State Board of Education
Major Duties Members According to the Missouri Constitution, "The supervision of instruction in the public schools shall be vested in a state board of education ..." (Article IX, Section 2a). This provision gives the State Board of Education general authority for public education, within limits set by the General Assembly. ( See Section 161.022 through 161.102, RSMo, for the Board's statutory authority.) The Board is made up of eight citizens appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Members serve staggered, eight-year terms so that one term expires each year. No more than four members of the Board may belong to the same political party. No more than one member of the Board may reside in the same county or Congressional district. When terms expire, members continue to serve until being replaced or reappointed. The Board elects its own officers each year. The Board usually meets for two days each month in Jefferson City. Members receive $25 for each day of an official meeting. The Board's duties and responsibilities range from preschool to the postsecondary and adult levels. The Board does not have direct authority over higher education institutions. However, the Board sets standards for and approves professional programs for teachers and school administrators in Missouri's public and private higher education institutions.

Calling him "a man of great integrity, a man of great judgment and a man who knows the law," President George W. Bush announced his decision to nominate John Ashcroft to serve as Attorney General of the United States on December 22, 2000. Upon confirmation by the Senate, Ashcroft pledged to renew the war on drugs, reduce the incidence of gun violence and combat discrimination so no American feels outside the protection of the law. Ashcroft was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 9, 1942. He was raised in Springfield, Missouri, where he attended public schools until enrolling at Yale University, where he graduated with honors in 1964. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967. He began his career of public service in 1973 as Missouri Auditor and was later elected to two terms as the state's Attorney General. His ability to work with leaders of both political parties prompted his colleagues in the non-partisan National Association of Attorneys General to choose him as Chairman. Ashcroft was elected Governor of Missouri in 1984 and held that post until 1993. During his tenure, he balanced eight consecutive budgets and served as Chairman of the Education Commission of the States.

University of Missouri - Rolla
General Education Program and Transfer Policy Proposal, April 2003 UMR provides a limited “general education” curriculum or plan due to the discipline specific curriculum of many of the university’s academic programs.  Since the late 1980’s, UMR has played an aggressive role in creating a transfer-student-friendly environment on the Rolla campus.  Regularly updated program-to-program transfer articulation agreements, or ”model programs” with over 50 two-year and four-year colleges and universities have served as the core to the transfer-student program.  In order to support the June 2000 Missouri CBHE guidelines for transfer of general education guidelines, UMR asked a faculty committee to outline a series of university courses to support the guideline’s learning objectives. The general education plan at University of Missouri - Rolla consists of a common core of curriculum offerings necessary to equip students for successful and fulfilled lives as educated and active citizens. The required general education curriculum consists of a broad range of courses that assures that all baccalaureate-degree-seeking students acquire academic skills and knowledge necessary for understanding, communicating, and performing in a diverse and complex world. Students completing courses in the general education plan will be provided the opportunity to acquire the following knowledge and skill abilities:
