    Education: Public School Teaching
The standard route to teaching in a public school is through an approved teacher preparation program. Although teaching in a public school typically requires certification, most states have adopted alternative routes to teacher certification. These programs provide an intensive teacher preparation program for liberal arts graduates with in-depth subject area knowledge. Many master's degree programs also lead to teacher certification. To address teacher shortage in areas around the U.S., several cities have adopted programs designed to recruit and provide intensive training to those who want to teach then place the individuals in schools - typically in an urban area. Teach For America, New York Teaching Fellows, Teach Kentucky are examples of such programs.

The Master of Science in LME program is completely online/web-based. On-campus work is not a feature of such a program. 2. I would like to get my certification as a library media specialist but my undergraduate degree is in elementary education. Will I have to take undergraduate courses? No, you do not. The Master of Science with the major in Library Media Education will give you the Rank II or Rank I for any Kentucky certificate and the P-12 certification as a library media specialist. The MS with a focus in the area of educational technology also satisfies the requirements for the Rank II or Rank I for any valid Kentucky certificate. 3. I have a Rank II certificate in Kentucky for middle grades education. Can I get certification as a library media specialist without taking an excessive number courses beyond what is required for a rank I? It depends on what previous courses are equivalent to those required for the MS in LME and the certification as a library media specialist. The Rank I requires a minimum of 60 sem. hours work including the Rank II or master's level. For those people in other states the Kentucky Rank I is usually equivalent to a "plus 30." Courses used from a previous master's degree cannot be older than 6 years by the completion date for the Master of Science LME.

History Education in the United States: A Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students
By Sarah Drake Brown and John Patrick
What is the condition of K-12 history education today? Answering this question requires an understanding of how the various states prepare and evaluate their teachers and students. This site offers a snapshot of state policies taken in Fall of 2002, focused on five key areas: teacher certification; content standards for teachers; content standards for students; high school graduation and exit exam requirements; and assessments. The Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association present this survey to those who seek to measure and improve how history is taught in America's elementary, middle, and high schools.

How does one become certificated to teach in the public schools (K-12) in Washington?
To be qualified to teach in the public (K-12) schools in Washington, you need to earn three things:
A Bachelor's Degree . If you want to teach in Washington, you must earn a bachelor's degree, either before beginning or concurrently with* an approved teacher certification program. (*The concurrent option is only available if the college or university where you're pursuing your bachelor's degree has an undergraduate teaching option; UW does not).
Teacher Certification . This can be accomplished through any approved four-year college or university in Washington, and can be accomplished through an undergraduate program, or through a "fifth year" (post baccalaureate) program, or through a graduate (master's) program. The University of Washington-Seattle's Teacher Education Program (TEP) results in a master's in teaching (MIT) degree. There is no undergraduate or "fifth year" certification option available at UW's Seattle campus, though there are "fifth year" programs in elementary (K-8) education available at UW-Bothell and UW-Tacoma. Other schools in Washington do offer undergraduate and post baccalaureate (i.e. "fifth year") options for teacher certification.
