About 25 Freedom schools are planned, of two varieties day schools......PROSPECTUS FOR A SUMMER FREEDOM SCHOOL PROGRAM IN mississippi general
http://www.educationanddemocracy.org/FSCfiles/B_05_ProspForFSchools.htm
PROSPECTUS FOR A SUMMER FREEDOM SCHOOL PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI The Proposal (originally submitted by Charles Cobb, Dec 1963) (Although this original proposal was submitted for the Mississippi Summer Project, it is relative to all Black Belt communities where the conditions are deplorably similar, and the prospectus is pertinent to the Freedom School programs that can operate all year round.) In our work, we have several concerns oriented around Mississippi Negro students: 1. The need to get into the schools around the state and organize the students, with the possibility of a statewide coordinated student movement developing. 2. A student force to work with us in our efforts around the state. 3. The responsibility to fill an intellectual and creative vacuum in the lives of young Negro Mississippians, and to get them to articulate their own desires, demands and questions. More students need to stand up in classrooms around the state, and ask their teachers a real question. As the summer program for Mississippi now shapes up, it seems as if hundreds of students as well as professional educators from some of the best universities and colleges in the North will be coming to Mississippi to lend themselves to the movement. These are some of the best minds in the country, and their academic value ought to be recognized, and taken advantage of. I would like to propose summer Freedom Schools during the months of July and August, for tenth and eleventh-grade high school students, in order to:

What You Should Know About K-12 Funding
  • A 2/3 majority of the House and Senate are on record as supporting K-12 full funding. The funding level that the governor is complaining about is required by law and is in fact an 8% cut to K-12 education. Even with the latest teacher pay increases, Mississippi still ranks 47 th in the nation in teacher pay. Our state ranks 49 th in per pupil expenditures.

As one of the smaller dental schools in the United States, the excellence of the academic, research and service programs is recognized. Our graduates now comprise over one-third of the active practicing dentists in the state, and this correlates well with the fact that more than 70% of our graduates practice in Mississippi. Our two postdoctoral programs, a General Practice Residency with six residents and Advanced Education in General Dentistry with five residents, strongly support and enhance our missions.

in Mississippi ~ 2005 “The first rule of advocacy is: ‘to whom are you advocating’
and the second rule is ‘what do they care about’
not ‘what do you care about’.”
Robert Lynch, Americans for the Arts Strengths:
  • There are many capable and experienced certified arts educators working in Mississippi’s K-12 schools today. Colleges and university teacher education programs are training the next generation of arts teachers and classroom teachers who integrate the arts. The Mississippi Visual and Performing Arts Framework 2003 (VAPA) is published and in implementation phase! To date, 467 teachers from 67% of Mississippi’s school districts have received training to implement the K-12 arts frameworks. A training DVD for the Mississippi Visual and Performing Arts Framework 2003 was created and then mailed to district superintendents and curriculum coordinators to assist in additional VAPA Framework training.

    School of Accountancy
To keep pace with the increasing number of career options in accounting, the University elevated its accounting program to a separate School of Accountancy in 1979. As a subject, however, accountancy has been a part of the University's curriculum since 1848. A national leader in accounting education, the School of Accountancy was the first in the state to receive accreditation of its bachelor's and master's accounting programs.
Advanced Technologies to Meet the Challenge
The School of Accountancy houses two national research centers: The National Tax History Research Center, co-sponsored by the Academy of Accounting Historians, and the National EDP Audit Archival Center. In addition, the School of Accountancy has two computer laboratories with seventy personal computers available for student use. These research centers and computer laboratories are valuable resources for accountancy students.

The history of Mississippi Valley State University parallels the changing demands of society and the expanding needs of the students the University serves. Although legislation authorizing the establishment of the institution was enacted in 1946, the University was not formally opened until 1950. The 1946 statute provided for the establishment of Mississippi Vocational College. The groundbreaking ceremony was held February 19, 1950, with the late Honorable Governor Fielding Wright, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the first President of the Institution, Dr. J. H. White, and interested friends participating. In the summer of 1950, the college opened with an enrollment of 305 in-service teachers. The first full academic year, 1950-51, began with 14 regular students and seven faculty members. The college offered the Bachelor of Science degree in 14 areas and provided Extension Services. In 1964, the name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State College. The College was then authorized to offer the Liberal Arts degree, as well as the Science and the Education degree. Emphasis was placed upon training in pre professional areas, as well as upon technical and specialized areas.

Brief History: Mississippi Valley State University was created by the Mississippi Legislature as Mississippi Vocational College in 1946. The expressed purpose of the Institution was to train teachers for rural and elementary schools and to provide vocational training. The first academic session started in 1950. Under its original name and purpose, the Institution provided higher education opportunities for many first generation college students.
In order to reflect the broadening scope and offerings of the Institution, its name was changed to Mississippi Valley State College in 1964. Under this transition, the Institution became more general purpose in nature while retaining its commitment to provide special higher education opportunities. The name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State University in 1974. Descriptive Information: Mississippi Valley State University is a regional institution responding to the needs of the Delta region of the state of Mississippi for accessible, relevant, and quality undergraduate programs as well as some graduate and public service programs. As a public institution, Mississippi Valley State University receives funds from the Mississippi Legislature and from other sources, including student fees, federal sources, and private gifts and grants. The academic programs of the University offer opportunities for concentrated study in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and professional fields of business, education, special services, and pre professional health services. Enrichment programs and support services enhance the university experience, help students achieve their personal and professional goals, and promote life-long learning.
