Three Organizations Prepare for Next Disaster
As disaster relief and human service organizations begin to transition from providing immediate emergency services to attending to the longer-term needs of Hurricane Katrina victims in the devastated areas and across the country, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way of America join together to ensure victims receive the kind of services each organization provides to those in need. American Red Cross
The role of the Red Cross is to build a bridge of assistance by providing food, shelter, counseling, financial assistance and other emergency needs for victims of disaster until they can access more permanent aid provided by local, state and federal agencies. After the emergency period ends, the Red Cross assists by coordinating services with other agencies such as The Salvation Army and United Way to help families affected by disasters. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has an extensive disaster response and recovery infrastructure able to meet the short-term and long-term needs of disaster survivors. Through its partnerships with other faith-based and non-faith based organizations, and its long-term working relationships with federal, state and local governments, the Army is prepared to provide food, clothing and shelter in the aftermath of storms, and then utilize its network of nearly 1,300 major centers of operation, and the collective efforts of nearly 50,000 officers and employees across the United States to assist survivors with long-term recovery needs that include counseling, pastoral and medical care, child care, senior citizen care and financial assistance.

History
"This is Mississippi, the middle of the iceberg." Bob Moses In the early 1960s, Mississippi was the poorest state in the nation. 86% of all non-white families lived below the national poverty line. In addition, the state had a terrible record of black voting rights violations. In the 1950s, Mississippi was 45% black, but only 5% of voting age blacks were registered to vote. Some counties did not have a single registered black voter. Whites insisted that blacks did not want to vote, but this was not true. Many blacks wanted to vote, but they worried, and rightfully so, that they might lose their job. In 1962, over 260 blacks in Madison County overcame this fear and waited in line to register. 50 more came the next day. Only seven got in to take the test over the two days, walking past a sticker on the registrar's office door that bore a Confederate battle flag next to the message "Support Your Citizens' Council."

NASA Teacher Resource Center Network
NASA Educational Affairs Division
For more than 25 years, the NASA Educational Affairs Division has provided educational programs and materials for teachers and students from the elementary to the university level. The NASA Teacher Resource Center Network, a dissemination mechanism to provide educators with NASA educational materials, is one of the programs that has helped science and mathematics teachers over the years.
NASA Teacher Resource Center Network
Teachers need immediate access to the information that is generated by NASA programs, technologies, and discoveries, so they can bring that excitement into their classrooms. NASA educational materials are related to art, mathematics, energy, physics, careers, spaceflight, aeronautics, technology utilization, physical science, and social science. They are a valuable supplement to textbook instruction. To help disseminate these materials to elementary and secondary educators, the NASA Educational Affairs Division has established the NASA Teacher Resource Center Network (TRCN). The Network comprises Teacher Resource Centers (TRCs), Regional Teacher Resource Centers (RTRCs), and the Central Operation of Resources for Educators (CORE).
Teacher Resource Centers
Located at the nine NASA research centers, TRCs have a variety of NASA-related educational materials in several formats: video tapes, slides, audio tapes, publications, lesson plans, and activities. NASA educational materials are available to be copied at the TRCs.

Medical School Curricula with Live Animal Laboratories
Below is a list of U.S. medical schools that still use live animals to teach basic concepts in human physiology, pharmacology, and/or surgery. Two-thirds of all U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford and Yale, have eliminated these old-fashioned laboratories in favor of modern, cost-effective and humane alternatives. Please write to your local universities and alma mater to express your concerns about these crude exercises. Please note that this list includes only schools that use live animal laboratories to train medical students, and does not refer to basic research that may be conducted at medical schools and universities. The 20 winners were selected on the basis of their significant achievement, ability to meet community needs, innovation, mobilization of other volunteers and depth of ongoing involvement. For their extraordinary volunteer efforts, each honoree will be presented with an engraved sterling silver medallion. "The service these people and organizations have accomplished is truly inspiring," commented Leslie Lenkowsky, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. "Their contributions set a standard for all Americans to follow in meeting the President's Call to Service, issued by President Bush, which asks all Americans to contribute 4,000 hours to service over the course of their lives." Since the program's inception in 1982, 382 individuals and organizations have received this award from the President of the United States.
