Grant supports nutrition lessons in Delta schools
By Keryn Page MISSISSIPPI STATE Children in 65 Mississippi Delta area elementary schools will learn about nutrition through an innovative curriculum funded by a grant aimed at preventing childhood obesity. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is providing $1.57 million for the five-year grant to support nutrition programs in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. Childhood obesity is one of four key issues being addressed by a tri-state Extension Service "memorandum of understanding" signed May 15. "This program mainly targets Mississippi school children in Delta counties," said Deborah Little, Family Nutrition Program accountability manager with Mississippi State University's Extension Service. In addition to the Mississippi schools, the grant provides funding for 10 schools in Louisiana and 10 in Arkansas. "The OrganWise Guys Take 10! Project" curriculum features puppets that represent different parts of the body. Students learn what function the different body parts perform, how nutrition relates to those different body parts and how it impacts overall health.

I was an officer in my sorority. The members of Kappa Delta Pi, the honorary education fraternity, voted me the outstanding senior. My Master’s Degree is from University of Central Florida. I’ve been a sixth grade teacher and media specialist in various Florida high schools, elementary and middle schools. I’ve had professional articles published, spoken at conferences and workshops, and won several educational awards and grants, including Florida's Master Teacher Award and was named 2001-2002 Teacher of the Year for Edgewater High School. In 2002, I was named a National Board Certified Teacher. When I’m not at school or at home, I exercise. In the past five years I've competed in running, canoeing and kayaking races. Almost every winter I snow ski at various resorts west of the Mississippi River. I have been a member of the opera, ballet, art museum and foreign film support groups. I also go to the theatre, symphony, movies and bookstores. I have vacationed and visited major art museums throughout the United States and in twenty-three foreign countries.

http://www.readertoreader.org/news/September2003.htm
Back to News Dear Friend of Reader To Reader, I hope you enjoy this newsletter about the Reader To Reader Book Project. Our success is very much due to your donations of books, postage money, and most of all your generous spirit. Please forward this newsletter and help us spread the word. We have already begun shipping boxes of books to the school libraries in towns such as Durant, Belzoni, Ruleville, Marks, Rolling Fork, Benoit, Webb, Woodville, and thirteen others, and we look forward to helping these schools for many years to come. I am pleased to report that the response from these schools has been tremendous. Here is some of the feedback we have received: Dear Mr. Mazor: Thank you very much for the books you have been sending us. It has gone a long way to updating our neglected library media center. Meager funding had resulted in the neglect and decline of our collection for the past 20 years. The materials you have been sending have breathed new life into the collection. As a result, students and faculty are rediscovering the wonders of books. It is phenomenal to observe this as it happens. All of the students at Durant High School are from economically deprived homes. They have few printed materials in the home. Durant is located in a rural area in Holmes County. Our school population is about 98% African American. The entire school qualifies for free lunch. It is hard to see so much potential in our students and know that the library media center does not have the resources they desperately need.

In 1964 the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE), Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) organised its Freedom Summer campaign. Its main objective was to try an end the political disenfranchisement of African Americans in the Deep South. Volunteers from the three organizations decided to concentrate its efforts in Mississippi. In 1962 only 6.7 per cent of African Americans in the state were registered to vote, the lowest percentage in the country.
CORE
SNCC and NAACP also established 30 Freedom Schools in towns throughout Mississippi. Volunteers taught in the schools and the curriculum now included black history, the philosophy of the civil rights movement . During the summer of 1964 over 3,000 students attended these schools and the experiment provided a model for future educational programs such as Head Start.
Freedom Schools
were often targets of white mobs. So also were the homes of local African Americans involved in the campaign. That summer 30 black homes and 37 black churches were firebombed.

    Teacher Resource Information
Teaching strategies come to life through Iowa Public Television resources. Problem-based learning, inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, and technology integration are cornerstones to Iowa Public Television multimedia resources. Browse the list, check out some links, pick up a new strategy or find out that you are using a strategy effectively! Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
Motivation, relevance and context, higher-order thinking, learning how to learn, and authenticity describe problem-based learning. Essentially, students are faced with a problem that is ill-structured, can change with the addition of new information, is not solved easily, and doesn't have a "right" answer.
This student-centered, learning-centered strategy puts the challenge of discovering and learning on the student and puts the teacher in the role of a facilitator who asks questions and offers some guidance in order to minimize frustration.
