One of the major social challenges facing the nation today is the plight of teenagers who cease to attend high school before graduation. In 1990, approximately 1,512 students were dropping out of school each day. In 1993, there were approximately 3.4 million people in the United States, ages 16-24, who were high school dropouts. Under-skilled and undereducated, they are adrift in a high-tech society that requires ever-increasing literacy, more education, and technical skills for even minimum wage jobs. Many become dependent upon social services, some become involved with the juvenile justice system.
Large segments of Mississippi youth do not complete high school. Approximately eight thousand youth drop out of the public school system in Mississippi each year. Further, over forty percent of the residents in the State of Mississippi who are twenty-five years of age or older did not graduate from school, and eighty-seven percent of the individuals who are incarcerated in Mississippi did not graduate from high school. The lack of adequate educational preparation for many of Mississippi's residents has brought unnecessary economic hardship due to many individuals failing to be a high school graduate, or by not having a high school equivalency diploma.

This is the winter of 1980, the thick of adolescence, and I'm spiraling downward faststealing vodka from liquor stores, punching instead of speaking, vandalizing automobiles that belong to my mother’s boyfriends. Later I will be called a latch-key kid or socially challenged; now I’m just called a juvenile delinquent or a little prick. It fits the mood in the country. Everyone is pissed-off, demoralized: Three Mile Island is setting off geiger counters, the Soviet Union is strangling Afghanistan, the Ayatollah is holding hostages. And a policeman is standing in my living room, pointing a blackjack at my chest. "Ma’am," he says to my mom, "he’s the one." My mom is a legal secretary, working for the Army at Fort Bliss Texas. She’s also a forty-year-old single parent; the truth is whatever she wants it to be. "Not my son," she says, "I don’t believe it." Location
Kosciusko is in central Mississippi, on the Natchez Trace Parkway north of Jackson.
Description
We popped off the Parkway to visit the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce Information Centre, and what little we saw of the town looked quite good.
Historical Note
Kosciusko is presumably named in honour of the Polish military leader and national hero Thaddeus Kosciusko, who fought not only for Polish freedom but also on the side of the colonists during the American Revolution. Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciusko, is also named in his honour. During his time in America, Kosciusko ordered the construction of fortifications at West Point, New York State, later to become the famous military academy. The Chamber of Commerce in Kosciusko, Mississippi, has a display about the West Point Military Academy. Presumably the nearby town of West Point, Mississippi derives its name for this reason. Date: Aug 2, 2005
Jonathan Massey (TE, Gautier, MS) - One of the South's fastest rising tight end prospects has added two schools to his "favorite" list. Army and Navy are both mentioned by the talented back.
The following information was revealed during our interview with Jonathan Massey
Which camps did you get a chance to attend this summer? "Well, I went to the Scout.com combine at Tulane . Our team also went to the Hoover 7 on 7 tournament last weekend. And as far as college camps, I went to Ole Miss ' and LSU 's."
How did Gautier fare at the Hoover combine? "We did not win a game, but there was some great competition out there. It was a great experience."
Which colleges are keeping in contact with you? "Ole Miss is the one that is sending me the most stuff, by far. Them, LSU, and Vandy. Those three recruit me the hardest. And Clemson , put them in there with those three. I still have the same offers. That is pretty much about it."

Executive Summary for
A Review of the Mississippi Military Department's
Armory and Military Unit Funds
September 12, 1995
Introduction PEER received complaints that general funds in the Military Department's rifle team bank account were not returned to the State Treasury at the end of FY 1992 as required by state law, but were transferred to a new bank account to be used for headquarters refurbishment. During this review, PEER sought to determine the expenditures of the rifle team fund, in particular, and whether the Military Department had operated that fund and other military unit bank accounts in accordance with the statutes of the State of Mississippi. Background For more than twenty years the Military Department has provided state general funds to national guard armory units bank accounts. As of January 1995, the Military Department was overseeing 104 military unit bank accounts and 140 military units, including national guard armories, the Mississippi Military Academy, and the State Guard. Overview The Military Department used monies appropriated for armory contractual services for other purposes such as rifle team travel and office equipment and decorations. Besides disbursing funds contrary to legislative intent, the Military Department violated budgetary and financial control statutes by:

Ronald Davis Remembers
"There we stood, enjoying the same hot dogs and drinks but with our backs to each other, separated by an invisible color line that ran down the middle of the store's hall." [Dr. Ronald L. F. Davis is a history professor at California State University at Northridge. He also runs the Natchez Courthouse Project in Natchez, Mississippi, working with graduate students to preserve courthouse records dating from the 18th century. In the 1800s, Natchez was home to one of the biggest slave auction houses along the Mississippi River.]
To the student: As you read this first person account of life during Jim Crow, ponder the following:
  • When relating his early experiences and feelings about blacks, Dr. Davis reveals a lot about the community in which he lived. Using his particular story as an example, can you show how the community, parents, laws, and customs, coupled with ignorance on the part of the child, create racism? What were the key factors that made Dr. Davis reassess his outlook toward blacks?

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/grant/peopleevents/p_sherman.html
William Tecumseh Sherman had a lot in common with Ulysses S. Grant . Like Grant, he was born in Ohio. Like Grant, he graduated from the military academy at West Point. Like Grant, he failed as a businessman. Like Grant, he was criticized as an incompetent officer. And like Grant, he became a fierce, uncompromising warrior who helped batter the Confederates into submission during the Civil War. In fact, Sherman spent much of his life providing evidence to support his most famous statement: "War is hell." Sherman was born in Ohio in 1820. When he was just nine, his father died, and he was sent to be raised by a family friend. Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. He saw his first action in the U.S. war against the Seminole Indians in Florida. During the Mexican War , he served in California and did not see battle. In 1853 Sherman resigned from the Army and traveled to San Francisco, which was then a gold boom town . There, he began work as a banker, but the Panic of 1857 put an end to his banking career. He served briefly as the head of a military academy in Louisiana, but when the Civil War broke out, he joined the U.S. Army as a colonel. Sherman fought at the First Battle of Bull Run, Virginia, in which Union troops were beaten badly by the Confederate Army. Sent to Kentucky to command troops there, he did poorly. His numerous requests for reinforcements and his generally nervous behavior caused some newspapers to describe him as insane. But with the support of a new commander, Ulysses S. Grant, Sherman found confidence.

The White House Fellows Program, founded in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, offers exceptional young men and women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the Federal government. White House Fellows typically spend one year working as full-time, paid special assistants to senior White House Staff, the Vice President, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials. Fellows also participate in an education program consisting of roundtable discussions with leaders from the private and public sectors, and trips to study U.S. policy in action. Following the Fellowship year, Fellows are expected to repay that privilege by contributing to the Nation as better leaders and public servants.
