Mississippi River Delta Basin
The Mississippi River has had a profound effect on the landforms of coastal Louisiana. The entire area is the product of sediment deposition following the latest rise in sea level about 5,000 years ago. Each Mississippi River deltaic cycle was initiated by a gradual capture of the Mississippi River by a distributary which offered a shorter route to the Gulf of Mexico. After abandonment of an older delta lobe, which would cut off the primary supply of fresh water and sediment, an area would undergo compaction, subsidence, and erosion. The old delta lobe would begin to retreat as the gulf advanced, forming lakes, bays, and sounds. Concurrently, a new delta lobe would begin its advance gulfward. This deltaic process has, over the past 5,000 years, caused the coastline of south Louisiana to advance gulfward from 15 to 50 miles, forming the present-day coastal plain. For the last 1,200 years, sediment deposition has occurred primarily at the mouth of the Mississippi River's Plaquemines-Balize delta, in the area defined as the Mississippi River Delta Basin. This delta is located on the edge of the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. Its ìbird's footî configuration is characteristic of alluvial deposition in deep water. In this configuration large volumes of sediment are required to create land area; consequently, land is being lost in this delta more rapidly than it is being created. The Mississippi River Delta Basin comprises approximately 521,000 acres of land and shallow estuarine water area in the active Mississippi River delta. Approximately 83 percent of this area, or 420,000 acres, is open water. The 101,100 acres of land in the basin are characterized by low relief, with the most prominent features being natural channel banks and dredged material disposal areas along the Mississippi River, its passes, and man-made channels. Coastal marshes make up approximately 61,650 acres or about 61 percent of the total land area in the Mississippi River Delta Basin. Eighty-one percent of this marsh is fresh, 17 percent is intermediate, and 2 percent is brackish-saline.

E stablished in 1864, The University of Denver is one of the largest doctoral granting private universities between the Mississippi River and the West Coast, with a current enrollment exceeding 9000 students. The University's location within a large metropolitan area in close proximity to the Rocky Mountains provides an ideal laboratory for physical and human geographers alike. The Department of Geography was established in 1945 and currently has over 50 graduate students and undergraduate majors. We are housed in the W. M. Keck Geosciences Center located in Boettcher Center West. Our facilities and equipment are state of the art. The department maintains three geographic information systems laboratories, a GPS base station, a computer cartography laboratory, a USDA approved soil/sediment laboratory, a weather and climate laboratory with real-time weather data reception capabilities, air photo interpretation and remote sensing equipment, and equipment to support the field components of classes and research. Instructional facilities include multimedia teaching classrooms, national and international field trips, and the Mt. Evans Alpine Research station just 45 minutes from campus for the study of mountain environments.

Mississippi , one of the East South Central states of the United States, bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana, and on the west by Louisiana and Arkansas. The Mississippi River forms almost all of the western boundary, and the Pearl River forms part of the southern boundary. Mississippi entered the Union on December 10, 1817, as the 20th state. Its economy was mainly agricultural until the middle third of the 20th century, when manufacturing became the dominant economic sector; service industries have become increasingly important in recent decades. Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, resided here. The name of the state is taken from that of the Mississippi River, the name of which is derived from an Algonquian Indian term for “big river.” Mississippi is called the Magnolia State. Land And Resources Mississippi, with an area of 125,443 sq km (48,434 sq mi), is the 32d largest state in the U.S.; 5.5% of its land area is owned by the federal government. The state is roughly rectangular in shape, and its extreme dimensions are about 530 km (about 330 mi) from north to south and about 290 km (about 180 mi) from east to west. Elevations range from sea level, along the Gulf of Mexico, to 246 m (806 ft), atop Woodall Mountain in the northeast. The approximate mean elevation is 91 m (300 ft). The state's coastline is 71 km (44 mi) long.

    What is the Delta?
    How was the Delta Formed?
    Six Natural Regions of Arkansas
Although Arkansas is most easily divided into two distinct geographical regions, the northwestern uplands and the southeastern lowlands, this description does not accurately portray the state's geographical complexity. There are actually six geographic sub-regions, three in both the uplands and the lowlands. The northwestern uplands are made up of three distinctive sub-regions: The Ozark Mountains, the Arkansas River Valley, and the Ouachita Mountains. The southeastern lowlands are comprised of the Gulf Coastal Plain, the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (the Delta), and Crowley's Ridge.
    • The Ozark region of Arkansas is located in the extreme northern and western portions of the state. This area is marked by flat-topped mountains, or plateaus, which have been eroded over millions of years. The Arkansas River Valley is the area carved by the river long ago. This 40-mile wide trough divides the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains. Most of Arkansas's larger cities can be found in the river valley-Fort Smith, Little Rock, and several others. The Ouachita Mountains lie south of the river valley. These mountains run east to west and are largely covered in pine trees. The soil here is even worse than that of the Ozarks. There are many unusual features here including Hot Springs and the diamond crater at Murfreesboro.

My name is June Hollis, and this was my first web site. I teach Advanced World Geography at Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi. I have taught English and social studies for 25 years at schools in the central Mississippi area including Florence Junior and High Schools, Chastain Junior High, and Pearl Junior High and have been at Brandon for 18 years. It is a wonderful school with wonderful students, faculty, and administration. I am lucky to call it home. I am a HUGE Brandon football fan! I earned my BS in English and History at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1965 and my Masters in Education with emphasis in History from Mississippi State University in 1980. I have earned post-graduate hours in geography and history from the University of North Alabama, University of Missouri at Columbia, California State at Chico, University of West Georgia, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi State University, and University of Mississippi. In the summer of 1998, I received a Hayes Fulbright grant to study Eastern Europe. Along with fifteen other teachers from Mississippi, I spent five weeks in Prague, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovak Republic studying architecture, art, history, literature, government, and other subjects. We traveled extensively throughout the region. This web site is a result of that trip. I hope to be able to post works done by students from anywhere. Mississippi is a state that is going through great changes. Part of the Deep South, it was once a land of farmers and quiet towns. It is becoming a state of factory workers and busy cities. But tradition plays an important part in Mississippi life. The state retains many reminders of the Old South. Stately mansions bring back memories of Mississippi plantation life before the Civil War. The large, sunny beaches and fine hotels of the Mississippi Gulf Coast are popular vacation destinations.
