SPECIAL NOTE This is the last "FYI" from my computer. Shortly after I became the Director, "FYI" was created to help organize all of the announcements and news into one information document that would be manageable. (Insert chuckle here!) There have been some enhancements along the way, most notably a shift from paper to digital formats off our web site. We laughed when the "FYI" rule kicked in with nearly every issue. Hours after it was proofed, finished and sent off, we found an error or received yet a new piece of information to include. And now all of those monthly issues are compiled into two "FYI" notebooks on the shelf above my headÑmy quasi journal as your Director with all that information summed up in about 8 inches of shelf space! Even after all these years of helping you manage and provide information, I continue to be surprised each day at the pace of information growth and how that development impacts our lives. My concerns arenÕt about the amount of information as much as it is about how technology and expedience has allowed information to be manipulated, condensed and even corrupted. More than ever your role in teaching students to be information literate in a technologically complicated world is critical to their future success as citizens and lifelong learners. Your work is important to everyoneÕs future. Under MaryÕs direction, I know you will continue to be successful.

Return to Mentoring Information Categories List The author of this web site has been keeping track of state-level mentoring programs for years. During that time I have seen that it's: 1. Difficult to draw conclusions about the sum of state-level novice teacher programming, because it is in constant flux 2. Possible to look at state level activity from several different perspectives, because of the various and complex themes that weave through beginning teacher support systems. This report takes one view point in presenting and analyzing the patterns in state-wide mentoring and induction programming. That approach views mentoring on a continuum in which assistance of novice teachers is at one end of the continuum and assessment of novice teachers is on the other end. Necessarily, that perspective "colors" how this information is presented and analyzed. What is presented here is:
  • A chart summarizing some of the studies and illustrating the changing picture described above, plus references to all the studies I found.
