With the population of Mississippi living longer and longer each year, specialized services for persons over 60 become increasingly important. The Mississippi Department of Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services is dedicated to keeping pace with the needs of the state's older citizens and to improving their quality of life. One of every six adults in Mississippi is over 60. In this population segment, about 79 percent own the homes in which they live. Their independence does not separate them far from their families, for more than two-thirds of this older generation live within 25 miles of relatives. As their numbers continue to grow, so does the need for providing older adults specialized Services:

      Natural Heritage Inventory: General Information
      An Inventory of Biological Diversity
The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program identifies the state's most significant natural areas through a comprehensive inventory of rare plant and animal species, exemplary natural communities, special geological features, and significant natural areas. From the inventory, the Natural Heritage Database compiles information on the distribution, biology, status, and preservation needs of these species and communities. Established in 1976, through a cooperative agreement between The Nature Conservancy, a private conservation organization, and the Mississippi Parks Commission (now part of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks), full administration of the program was assumed by the DWFP in 1978. The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program is part of an international network including State Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centers, all building on the same data collection methodology. The database is updated continuously and is used to set state, national and global priorities for the preservation of natural diversity.

Archived Information Review of Charter School Legislation Provisions Related to Students with Disabilities, September 1998
    General Legislative Provisions
This first part of the review examines statutory provisions that have implications for, but do not necessarily address directly, students with disabilities or special education. Various provisions in state statutes grant charter schools varying levels of authority to govern themselves and to make decisions regarding the operation of the schools, including decisions related to personnel, curriculum, and expenditures. The extent of a charter school's operational autonomy will have an impact on how special education programs are implemented in these schools. As described in the following paragraphs, statutory provisions that give higher levels of autonomy include ones that allow or require charter schools to (1) operate independent from local school districts, (2) make their own personnel decisions, (3) be exempt from state and district education laws and regulations, (4) assume liability for their actions, and (5) receive their funding directly from the state. Independence from districts.

Mississippi State Mississippi 39762 Kent@curriculum.msstate.edu The effective infusion of technology in Mississippi classrooms is a clear statewide need. As Mississippi's Master Plan for Educational Technology (1996) notes, "There is currently little systematic integration of technology into the curriculum in the majority of schools." This need of technology is especially critical in the area of special education. Students with disabilities who require assistive technology for expressive communication find themselves attending schools ill-equipped to meet their needs. The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability along with the Mississippi State University Department of Education recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Education to develop and validate a technology-based approach for the use of assistive technology to improve access to and participation in the general curriculum for students with disabilities. The model will provide a process for utilizing appropriate augmentative and alternative communication technologies, strategies, and techniques to enhance educational outcomes of students with disabilities in rural school environments that have little knowledge of or utilization of assistive technology for expressive communication.
