1-800-DIGNITY What to do if your child is missing
If you believe your child may be missing, take action immediately. If you think your child may be at a friend's house, call that number. If your child is not there, follow this plan.
FIRST: Call 911 and tell the person who answers the phone that you are reporting a possible missing child and it is a high-priority police emergency. He or she will start asking questions. Remain calm and answer the questions as completely as possible. The operator will relay this information to officers on the street while you are talking, so action will already be underway. SECOND: When you hang up, immediately call the nearest missing children's organization in your area. This is not a time to be searching for phone numbers. You should already have this number written in a safe place. The people who staff these organizations know exactly what to do and will jump into action immediately. THIRD: Contact the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This is a clearinghouse for missing children and it has the ability to get the word out about your child coast-to-coast. Its number is 1(800) THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). Keep this number in a safe place. The national center can also put you in touch with a local missing children's organization in your area.

This analysis compares selected findings from the second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART-2) and its predecessor, NISMART-1. It is based on household surveys of adult caretakers and covers victims of family abductions, runaways, and children categorized as "lost, injured, or otherwise missing". The most important finding is the absence of increases in any of these problems. For some types of episodes, the incident rates decreased.

To serve as a membership association for non-profit missing and exploited children's organizations and to support the endeavors of the Membership on behalf of missing and exploited children, their families, and the community-at-large. These purposes are strictly non-commercial and not-for-profit.
OVERVIEW

AMECO is an association of missing and exploited children's organizations in the U.S. and Canada founded in 1994. AMECO was founded by a group of non-profit organizations that wanted to work together for three reasons: To combine their efforts in influencing the policies and services for missing and exploited children. To raise awareness among the public of the work of the non-profit organizations. To create a way for the public to distinguish between reputable organizations and those created merely as a fundraising vehicle to take advantage of the large number of people who want to contribute to missing children organizations. In the past, instances of unethical fundraising techniques for missing and exploited children by organizations offering few if any services with the donations received have tainted the entire group of non-profit organizations. Certification by AMECO validates the integrity and professionalism of the member organizations.

Wednesday (5/25) is the International Day of Missing Children, a time to focus attention on the widespread problem of child trafficking. The children’s organization PLAN has released a new report on the problem in Togo, where some estimates say as many as 300,000 children – between the ages of 5 and 15 - have been sent to work in foreign cities or countries. In its new report, PLAN says, “The trafficking of children is one of the most severe violations of human rights in the world today – involving over a million children worldwide and hundreds of thousands of children in West Africa alone.” PLAN’s program director in Togo, Bell’Aube Houinato says the organization realized the scope of the problem after it surveyed hundreds of families.

Tuesday, 20 May 2003 Manhattan Affiliate Office Opens Its Doors With Support of New Advisory Board The Manhattan Affiliate Office was established to raise awareness of NCMEC and ICMEC's many programs and services to tri-state area parents, children and caregivers related to child abductions, molestation and sexual exploitation. Additionally, the new affiliate will look to build financial support for programs and services provided by both organizations and to ultimately implement local programs and services to benefit the tri-state community. "NCMEC is a strong, viable national organization and ICMEC is expanding our programs and services to a global audience, but our foremost commitment is to build a far greater grassroots presence in local communities across America. Our first priority in making that happen is the City of New York. We are confident that we can touch the lives of many more children and families, and that our success will stem from the direct support of the people and organizations that represent this city," stated Ernie Allen, president and CEO of NCMEC. "The plight of missing and exploited children goes beyond national borders. Our international neighbors are profoundly affected by the same challenges that we face here at home. The Manhattan Affiliate Office will lead the charge in building both national and international support from community leaders and businesses represented here in New York City," stated The Honorable Arnold I. Burns, chair of ICMEC's board of directors and a managing director of Natexis Bleichroeder, Inc
