Is the work of Homer based on real events? What was Greece like before the classical age? This course will examine the first civilisations of ancient Greece by studying the great palaces of Minos and Agamemnon, the houses of Thera, and the tombs of the first Greek kings.
This course aims to introduce students to the first civilizations of ancient Greece through detailed study of the archaeological material, looking in particular at the sites of Knossos, Mycenae and Akrotiri. The classes will cover some of the earliest archaeological material from the Greek mainland and islands, starting with a detailed study of the sculptured figurines from the Cycladic islands, then looking at the first villages on mainland Greece and culminating in a thorough examination of the Minoan sites of Knossos and Akrotiri and the mainland site of Mycenae. This will include investigating material from the Mycenae shaft graves thought to be graves of king Agamenon, famous through the stories of Homer and the Trojan War, and the site of Knossos thought to be the palace of the mythological King Minos.

125 Washington Avenue Albany, New York information@ albanyinstitute.org Ancient Egyptian Art and Culture BRIEF HISTORY Egypt was ancient even to those cultures we regard as ancient. It was a powerful nation a thousand years before the Minoans of Crete built their palace at Knossos, and about 900 years before the Israelites followed Moses out of Egypt. It flourished when tribesmen still dwelled in huts above the Tiber River in what is now Italy. Egypt was viewed by Greeks and Romans of 2,000 years ago in much the same way as the ruins of Greece and Rome are viewed today. The first flowering of Egyptian culture occurred a few centuries after the unification, during the period of the Old Kingdom (Dynasties III-VIII) from about 2,700 BC to 2,150 BC. With a strong political and social structure in place, agriculture flourished and Egyptians regularly sent cargoes of lentils, textiles, papyrus, and other products to other countries in exchange for copper, bronze, gold, silver, ivory, rare woods, turquoise, and exotic animal skins. A system of writing called hieroglyphics was introduced and this promoted the creation of stories, poems, and religious texts. The Egyptians also devised mathematical methods for calculating taxes, land surveys, weights and measures, distance, and time. They also explored astronomy, engineering, and medical sciences.

by Robert Brow (web site - www.brow.on.ca) This article originally appeared in Christianity Today [October 26, 1973], pp. 8-10.
(This article offered a model to explain the Table of Nations in Genesis 10. At the time it was published there were still some who used the curse of Ham as an argument for apartheid. It is included in this Model Theology web site to illustrate the importance of working at the model which the biblical writers may have had in mind when they first wrote. It would be wise to do this before we jump into explanations based on totally different historical assumptions.) "Cursed by Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers. Blessed by the LORD my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave. God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave" ( Genesis 9:25-27 That the curse of Ham cannot be applied to black people is easily shown from the text itself. What is usually missed is the astonishing unfolding of world history that the words of this oracle refer to. To interpret the oracle we will need to understand the logic of the Table of Nations given in Genesis 10 which is the next chapter. Scholars have generally assumed that this outline of racial origins is ignorant guesswork based on the geographical locations of the peoples that surrounded Israel many centuries after Abraham.
