http://history-world.org/ancient_civilization.htm
ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS the requirements and patterns to development The Ancient City of Jericho  The term civilization basically means the level of development at which people live together peacefully in communities. Ancient civilization refers specifically to the first settled and stable communities that became the basis for later states, nations, and empires. The study of ancient civilization is concerned with the earliest segments of the much broader subject called ancient history. The span of ancient history began with the invention of writing in about 3100 BC and lasted for more than 35 centuries. Mankind existed long before the written word, but writing made the keeping of a historical record possible. The first ancient societies arose in Mesopotamia and Egypt in the Middle East, in the Indus Valley region of modern Pakistan, in the Huang He (Yellow River) valley of China, on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea, and in Central America. All of these civilizations had certain features in common. They built cities, invented forms of writing, learned to make pottery and use metals, domesticated animals, and created fairly complex social structures with class systems. Apart from written records and carved inscriptions, the knowledge about ancient peoples is derived from the work of archaeologists. Most of the significant archaeological findings have been made in the past 200 years. The Sumerian culture of Mesopotamia was discovered in the 1890s, and some of the most important archaeological digs in China were made after the late 1970s.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Ancient Greece , civilization that thrived around the Mediterranean Sea from the 3rd millennium to the 1st century bc , known for advances in philosophy, architecture, drama, government, and science. The term “ancient Greece” refers to both where Greeks lived and how they lived long ago. Geographically, it indicates the heartland of Greek communities on the north coast and nearby islands of the Mediterranean Sea. Culturally, it refers to the ways ancient Greeks spoke, worshiped, understood the nature of the physical world, organized their governments, made their livings, entertained themselves, and related to others who were not Greek. The most famous period of ancient Greek civilization is called the Classical Age, which lasted from about 480 to 323

The first culture of Aegean civilization on the Greek mainland is named Mycenaean for the palace at Mycenae on the Pelop³nnisos. Scholars call the Mycenaeans the “earliest Greeks” because they are the first people known to have spoken Greek. Mycenaean culture developed later than Minoan. The ancestors of the Mycenaean people wandered onto the mainland from the north and the east from about 4000 to 2000

Knossos and Crete in the 15th Century BC
Prof. John Bennett, Institute of Archaeology, Oxford
Wednesday 21 th April 2004
Professor Bennett's talk on Knossos in the 15th century BC, at the April meeting, was an examination of the mainland Mycenaean takeover of the island Minoan Civilization ca. 1450 BC. In an eloquent and wide ranging presentation he discussed the nature of the evidence without actually reaching any firm conclusions - perhaps that's how you become a Professor! Human occupation of the site of Knossos dates back to 7000 BC, the urbanisation of the First Palace period is dated ca.1900-1700 and the Second Palace period ca. 1700-1470 (Castleden's dating). It is therefore not surprising that Arthur Evans saw the Minoans as the first European Civilisation and Knossos as its ruling centre - such an attitude is now know as My-site-itus. The views of Evans remained paramount until his death in 1940. Thereafter cracks appeared in the theory with the discovery by Karl Blegan of a large Linear B archive at Pylos and the identification of Linear B as Greek by Michael Ventris in 1953. It was thereby clear that mainlanders held administrative control during the final palace phase of Knossos (1450-1370 BC), but, said Professor Bennett, more work needed to be done to establish what exactly constituted a "Mycenaean takeover". Following the Ventris revelation, scholars looked at changes in the material artefacts and cited then as evidence for a regime change. But pottery styles of the mainland and the island are very similar for this period, said the speaker. Was this because a new elite had moved in at Knossos, or because Minoan artists had been taken as slaves to the mainland, or was it part of a process whereby it became fashionable to be seen in a certain way. Professor Bennett described the Minoans and Mycenaeans as being like actors, they made a conscious decision about how to present their identity. This meant that change could just as easily be adopted as imposed and archaeology gives little or no clue as to which scenario is taking place.

Minoan Crete, the First European Civilization.
Dr. Nicoletta Momigliano, Bristol University
Wednesday 16 th June 2004
We were all fascinated by an early map showing the lady Europa, though it was necessary to turn Europe sideways with west at the top to see Spain formed the headdress and head, Italy was the right arm and so on. Unfortunately the poor old British Isles became just a blob off the left shoulder. Apparently the Romans never thought of themselves as Europeans. Europe as an idea has constantly changed throughout the ages depending which nationality has been describing it. It has evolved according to the whim of individuals.' Sir Arthur Evans was working for the Manchester Guardian in 1875 when he was reporting on the Ottomans in the Baltic. At the same time he was searching for the history of Europe and trying to prove the Greeks were the origin of European culture. After his discoveries at Knossos he thought the Minoans belonged to a specific race superior to the Greeks and became one of the 20th. century purveyors of the idea that Crete formed the 'Cradle of European Civilisation'. Now in the 21st. century we learn that European Union money will be used to develop and preserve Knossos and a conference will be held in Venice where Dr. Nicoletta Momigliano will be speaking. We are privileged to have heard so many thought provoking aspects of the subject first!

The Minoans and Myceneans About the People Minoans
Small, dark skin, and long dark hair. Men wore striped loincloths, long flowery robes, or pants that bagged at the knees. Women wore full skirts and jackets and lots of jewelry. Men farmed and fished. Women performed household duties, attended sporting events, and hunted in chariots. Loved sports, especially boxing and bull-leaping. In bull-leaping men and women fought the bull together. The man grabbed the horns, the bull would toss him, he would somersault through the air, and the woman was supposed to catch him. Possibly a religious ceremony. Myceneans Copied Minoans.

Archaeology
The programme begins with an introduction to archaeological methods together with a range of optional courses in practical or culture-based archaeology. The department's particular strengths are in world prehistory, the great civilisations of the ancient world, and applied science in archaeology.
Egyptology
Students will get the opportunity to study the society, language, culture, and material remains of pharaonic Egypt. A major attraction of the study of a literate ancient society like this is the direct interaction between texts, monuments and archaeological sites in the reconstruction of its history and culture.
Classics
This subject allows students to explore the whole range of the history, through languages, as well as the literary and material culture of the Greco-Roman world from about the first millennium BC to the first centuries AD.
Ancient History
Ancient History covers the Greco-Roman world from the Mycenaeans and Minoans to the early centuries of the first Millennium.

The earliest figurine discovered to date originated somewhere between 500,000 and 300,000 BC, during the Middle Acheulean period. Discovered in Morocco , it is about 6 centimeters long. Evidence suggests that this Moroccan piece may have been created by natural geological processes with a minimum of human tool -work, but the piece bears evidence of having been painted; "a greasy substance" on the stone's surface has been shown to contain iron and manganese and indicates that it was decorated by someone and used as a figurine, regardless of how it may have been formed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3047383.stm

ANCIENT APOCALYPSE: MYSTERY OF THE MINOANS.
Program Synopsis
Minoan Crete has recently become an enigma. The long held orthodoxy of a peaceful aesthetically minded society has been challenged by gruesome discoveries at Knossos and Amenosopilia. The explanation of this apparent conflict in the historical record may be found in the research of vulcanologists, geologists and climatologists. The archaeological investigations and problem solving displayed in this program are a showcase of the ways in which Science, Archaeology and History supplement and complement each other. The senior student of Archaeology or of Minoan History will find this material very useful, challenging and rewarding. Some younger students may struggle with the scientific evidence and theories used in the investigation.
Staying Focused
This is the data collection stage of the activity.
The detailed questioning is designed to ensure that students decode the visual and aural materials presented to them in the video.
The video programs can be stopped at the end of each section. This will allow students to share and discuss answers.
