Dr V G Callender
Assoc. Lecturer, Macquarie University
Principal focus
Through investigating the archaeological and written evidence of Bronze Age: Minoan Society , students learn about key developments and forces that shaped the society in its historical context.
Outcomes
H 1.2 describes and analyses political, military, religious, social, cultural and economic features of ancient societies. H 4.1 identifies different perspectives about individuals, groups, events and issues.
Occupations
Archaeological evidence gives us information about the ordinary activities of Minoan people. The remains of their tools tell us about the sorts of work that people did. The occupants of the palace workrooms, for example, left behind a number of huge bronze saws, some stone hammers, different sorts of knives and stone axes. In the town of Gournia too, the excavator, Harriet Boyd, found a large collection of specialist tools, such as chisels, knives, awls, punches, nails, hammers, grinding querns, loom weights, and fish hooks. It is easy for you to work out the occupations from those. And we need only to look at the remains of buildings in Gournia and other places in Crete to realise that the masons, or workers who cut stone, must have been among the most essential Minoan tradesmen.

It is named for the legendary King Minos of Crete. The culture was divided by Sir Arthur Evans into three periods that include the whole of the Bronze Age: Early Minoan (c.3000 B.C. B.C. ), Middle Minoan (c.2200 B.C. B.C. ), and Late Minoan (c.1500 B.C. B.C. ). Early Minoan saw the slow rise of the culture from a neolithic state with the importation of metals, the tentative use of bronze, and the appearance of a hieroglyphic writing. In the Middle Minoan period the great palaces appeared at Knossos and Phaestus; a pictographic script (known as Linear A) was used; ceramics, ivory carving, and metalworking reached their peak; and Minoan maritime power extended across the Mediterranean. Toward the end of the period an earthquake, and possibly an invasion, destroyed Knossos, but the palace was rebuilt. During this period there is evidence of a new script (Linear B) at Knossos, which argues the presence of Mycenaean Greeks. Other luxurious palaces existed at this time at Gournia, Cydonia (now KhAnia), and elsewhere. Knossos was again destroyed c.1500

[Prof Arkenberg writes] Here are two texts on the Minoans. Of course, these have always been suspect. However, recent archaeological finds have begun to show the kernel of truth in both the tale of Theseosand the child sacrifice that occurred in the Labyrinthand Herodotus' accounts of the two depopulations of Crete do seem to have a basis in fact. Of course, Herodotus doesn't mention the Thera explosion, but famine and pestilence which would undoubtedly have accompanied that blast appears to have remained in Greek memory.

    History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

Around 1000 years later probably there was a slow and continous flow of Greek speaking people to Greece. They formed the first Greek civilization around 1600 BC known as "Mycenean". Before there was a long period where both Greeks and pre-Greeks lived together. Greek speaking people around 1500 started to control the Minoans who slowly adopted the Greek language. The Linear A script of the Minoans was replaced by the Linear B script. Some important differences between the Minoans and Myceneans: The Minoans did not use fortification to protect their palaces. The rulers of Mycenae were buried in monumental tombs that demonstrated probably their status. The name for the ruler was wannaka (something like "lord" that later was transformed in Classical Greek to wanax and anax . The Myceneans adopted the Minoan Art but as a more warriorlike culture they were less artistic skilled.

Updated 7/20/05 A Brief Comparison of Greek and Roman Sculpture by Teacher Oz (me):
When comparing Greek and Roman sculpture you need to know about the three distinct periods of Greek sculpture. The Greek Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic styles each represent different ideals. Archaic, best represented by the Kouros, evolved from Egyptian sculpture. Kouros characteristics were: rigidity, one foot forward stance, formal hair treatment, bilateral symmetry (same on left and right), and its frontality (block like). It differed from the Egyptian in that the sculpture was nude, there was no webbing between the arms and body, and there was attention to anatomical detail. The Archaic Kouros was the composite of the athletic ideal through mathematical formula(1:8). It was not realistic, but idealistic.
During Classical period, the change in sculpture was embodied by one word: controposto . The most significant change in sculpture to that date, controposto was the counterbalance, or s-curve of the body. One foot came forward and the weight distribution became more naturalistic. Besides conroposto, the other characteristics of Classical sculpture were: head turned on different plain from body (aloof, representing reason controlled) and less formal hair treatment. Archaic was carving "stone into body", while Classical was carving a "body out of stone". "The Canon", by Polyclitus, is the archetype of classical sculpture. The goal of classical sculpture was to portray a perfect balance and harmony through art. This mirrored Greek philosophy.

    The People of Greece
    Rising From Ancient Civilization

Anthony Quinn as "Zorba the Greek" played up the playful and proud nature of Greece's people. Melina Mercouri, Greece's world-famous actress and cultural ambassador, likewise brought the passion and independence of the Greeks to the movies in "Never on Sunday." These two beloved actors skillfully endeared interntational audiences to the people who gave our world some of history's greatest philosophers, architects, artists and adventurers. The people of Greece have their own, special lineage. The Minoan people , were traders, developing the most advanced navy that had ever been seen. All of this concentrated mercantile activity produced great wealth, which went into massive building projects, art, and technological development.
    Who were the "Hellenes?"
You may notice the term"Hellenic"; is used often in referring to the people of Greece. What does it mean? Hellenic Greece was the ancient civilization of Hellas in what is modern Greece... Bound on land by Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Albania to the north, to the east by Turkey and the waters of the Aegean Sea and to the west and south by the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas. Regarded by many as the cradle of Western civilisation, Greece has a long and rich history during which it spread its influence over three continents.
    The people were called Hellenes.

According to models presented here, the very first states emerges with the invention of the trade . When the level of agricultural, mining and pottery technologies increased enough to let the first human villages create the surplus of goods that could be traded, the first states and government could appear. Choice of first traded goods we can get to know analyzing the system of clay tokens from Syria and Mesopotamia region. Generally the first civilizations emerge in regions that have large agricultural surplus and easy ways to trade them. The best places are the river valleys.
