Homepage Winter quarter 2003 marks the 25th season that MSU for Seniors has been in operation. Fall quarter began on October 3 with an enrollment of 95. This included four new members: Joyce Mundahl, Romaine Touhey, Judy Vosbeek, and Nancy Zwickey. We are always eager to welcome new members. If you know of people who would be interested, please call our office (389-2011), call Dorothy Lindsay (345-5740), or write their names on your registration form and we will add them to our mailing list. If you would like to bring a guest to a class, you may get a blue guest form at the office. Please turn this form in a few days prior to the class. Please check the Committee Participation Interest Page on the reverse side of your Schedule of Courses We would welcome you to any of these committees that interest you. Also, if you have suggestions for course offerings, you may contact Win Grundmeier (388-7246) or any member of the Curriculum Committee. Our courses have often come as suggestions from members. You may join MSUS at the beginning of any quarter. Having joined for one quarter makes you a member for the year and entitles you to be among the first entitled to Special Events and for voting privileges. Non-members may be included for Special Events if there is space available by paying a surcharge. Most of our classes are held at the Blue Earth County Library, at the Summit Center, or in room 232, Armstrong Hall. For the meetings held on campus a parking permit is necessary. You may request one on your registration form. Our permit is white with a silver stripe and is valid only for lots 13 (Crawford - McElroy dormitory) and 16 (Performing Arts). Be careful not to park in a space reserved for those with a gold permit or your car will be ticketed.

By Virginia Vitzthum Urge: Naked World Kill the yeast beast! Yogurt-soaked tampons, carnivorous tree bark and boiled panties all crush vaginal thrush. By Hank Hyena Seventy-two-year-old Mary Sarno would probably agree. Sarno, who lives in Florida, wants to be near her daughter but in court filings says she simply can't afford to move to Minnesota, where her daughter lives. Sarno and her husband claim that they can't afford to pay the $800-a-month increase in drug costs. The suit claims unfair Medicare subsidies not only violate Sarno's equal-protection rights, but her constitutional "right to travel." (This argument was used recently to overturn state welfare laws that gave smaller payments to newcomers.) Courts have decreed that the government cannot create barriers to people moving freely between states. Although Sarno is effectively a stand-in for millions of Americans allegedly hurt by Medicare rules, she won't talk about her situation to maintain her privacy, according to her attorney.

The Senior Companion Program
The Senior Companion Program (SCP) is one of the three Senior Corps programs by the National Senior Service Corps. The Senior Companion Program offers seniors age 60 and older the opportunity to serve individuals who have difficulty with daily living tasks. Senior Companions serve many at-risk, frail elderly who would in many cases have to go to a nursing home if they did not have this one-to-one support.
Senior Companions serve from 12 to 20 hours per week and receive a small tax-free stipend (the stipend does not affect any of the benefits they may be receiving). They also receive a meal and travel allowance.
Would you or someone you know be interested in serving as a friend to a homebound senior citizen?
While all Senior Companion Program volunteers receive the benefit of helping others, they also receive a meal allowance and financial benefits including a monthly stipend, accident insurance, and sick pay.
Fill out our information request form to find out how to become a Senior Companion.
