"All I kept thinking was, 'yeah, I want to be this stimulated, this motivated, this excited about what I do all the time.' The Media Center gave me an entirely new perspective on the future of media, and the experience motivated me to develop a personal strategy to participate in the media convergence/citizen journalist/moblogging-like-mad future we discussed." 90. Article Written By Doug Johnson
Is your school s media program keeping current with these changes? Does the media center serve as the hub of these information networks with routers,
http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/checklist.html
Article by Doug Johnson Home Articles Contact information Column title, periodical, and issue: 12 Point Library/Media Program Checklist for Building Administrators Book Report , Jan 1996 Revised in 1999 (Now "A Point Library/Media Program Checklist for Building Administrators") No More Agents of Benevolent Neglect! Over the next 30 years, my view of school administrators did not improve a great deal as I moved from being a student to being a teacher, to finally being a media specialist. The worst principal I worked for often bragged that he managed to obtain his college degrees without ever setting foot in a library. I told him I could tell. The best principal I had, I considered an agent of benevolent neglect. There was an unspoken agreement that if I left him alone, he would leave me alone. Rapid changes in technology, learning research, and the library profession in the past ten years are leaving school media programs at a wide range of development. Is your school's media program keeping current with these changes? The brief checklist below can be used with your media professionals to help evaluate the currency of your media program. 1) Professional staff and duties Does each media center have the services of a fully licensed media specialist?

How can you increase your earning potential and marketability? Advance within your school corporation? Become a leader in curriculum development without giving up teaching? Become an Instructional Media Specialist Integrating computers and other modern information technologies into the curriculum is a top priority for many school systems, and school media specialists are the people who know how to do this.
As an instructional school media specialist, you will:
  • work with modern information technologies in a school setting. promote reading for pleasure and instruction. plan programs to improve student and teacher use of information resources.
The number of school districts looking for full-time professionals in school library media and information technology has more than doubled since 1990. Many schools-both elemetary and secondary-are increasing their number of of full-time school media specialists. Plus, large nubmers of school librarians and media specialists are projected to retire in the next few years. There's never been a better time to enter the field and make a difference in education. "I made the change from public library work to a school media environment primarily because I wanted to be more directly involved with children in their education, and I wanted to facilitate the development of their information literacy skills-especially a lifelong love of reading. I have more of a sense of connectedness, continuity, and deeper personal satisfaction as a school media specialist than I experienced previously in public libraries."
