42. The Media Center: Why Are Media Positions Cut? How Not To Survive!
by Mary Alice Anderson • Lead media Specialist, Winona Middle school, This spring even more media specialist positions in minnesota are in danger

The Media Center Why Are Media Positions Cut? How Not to Survive! by Mary Alice Anderson Lead Media Specialist, Winona Middle School, Winona, Minnesota MultiMedia Schools • May/June 2002 Let's examine practices that illustrate how not to survive. Only when we face the "fatal errors" that can be made can we get to higher ground. H ave you noticed that there are fewer media specialists than in the past?
  • In an Iowa district, full-time elementary media specialists were replaced with half-time media specialists; in other schools clerical time was reduced.
In a large Illinois school district, cuts were supposed to be made at all levels, but the only cuts actually made impacted the media centers at each building. A media specialist who left was not replaced.
In a Southern state, elementary media specialists were given additional teaching assignments such as teaching reading an hour and a half a day, yet were listed as full-time media specialists in the building.
Almost an entire district media department, including its director, was eliminated in a large Minnesota district a year ago. In another district, full-time media program paraprofessionals have replaced media specialists in all elementary schools. This spring even more media specialist positions in Minnesota are in danger because of state funding limitations and the failure of many school districts to pass operating fund initiatives.

What's Happening? Why?

43. The Media Center: Compiling A Profile Of Staff Technology Skills
The media Center. Compiling a Profile of Staff Technology Skills Last year all minnesota school districts were required to update district technology
http://www.infotoday.com/MMSchools/jan02/anderson.htm
The Media Center Compiling a Profile of Staff Technology Skills by Mary Alice Anderson Lead Media Specialist, Winona Middle School, Winona, Minnesota MultiMedia Schools • January/February 2002 I n 1997 our staff participated in a paper/pencil self-assessment of their technology skills. That assessment, the need for assessment, and other assessment tools were my "Media Center" topic in November/December 2000. In this month's column, I address how we implemented a follow-up assessment using Profiler, an online collaboration tool. We accessed Profiler at the High Plains Regional Technology in Education Consortium, one of 10 such consortiums funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Profiler is found at http://profiler.hprtec.org . There is no cost to use the instrument.
The Need for Data
Last year all Minnesota school districts were required to update district technology plans. Among the required components was increased attention to staff development and evaluation. Our plan, approved by the Winona Area Public Schools board, states: The district will conduct a follow-up assessment of staff technology competencies. This assessment will provide data that will be an addition to the baseline data collected in December 1997. The assessment will assess staff skills and use of technology as a tool for teaching.

Minnesota School Combines Indoor Air Quality with Energy Efficiency
Students and teachers in Red Wing, Minnesota are enjoying a new high school that uses the latest in efficient, quiet HVAC technology to provide optimal indoor air quality. Air quality requirements mandated by ASHRAE Standard 62-89, Ventilation For Acceptable Air Quality , have reversed the impact of the post oil embargo reduction in outside air ventilation to occupied spaces of the late 1970's. While the increase in outdoor air supply could not come too soon for those who are sensitive to poor indoor air quality, few people seem to remember the reason for reducing the outdoor air requirements in the first place. The drive toward energy efficiency to reduce dependence on foreign petroleum products seems to be a dim memory for many in the engineering profession today. The new Red Wing high school design exceeds the goals of energy efficiency from the 1970's while retaining the ventilation requirements of ASHRAE Standard 62-89. The advances in new HVAC technology along with an integrated approach to design problems have provided the school with HVAC systems that operate witth remarkable efficiency and provide exceptional comfort, air quality and acoustics. The 267,000 square-foot school, located west of Red Wing and the Mississippi River, accommodates 1400 students. John Brady of Armstrong, Torseth, Skold and Rydeen Architects and Engineers in the Twin Cities worked closely with the Twin Cities Trane district office to provide and unprecedented solution to the demands of indoor air quality, acoustics and energy efficiency.

Despite this week's tragedy in Minnesota, school safety has improved.
By Amanda Paulson When teens in Marshfield, Mass., started fantasizing about a massacre in their high school, a few began to have doubts. Fortunately, there was an adult they trusted, a school resource officer, who was alerted to details about the plot last fall. The officer quickly investigated. Police later found maps, lists of guns and ammunition to buy, and bomb-building instructions. In the end, Tobin Kerns and Joseph Nee were charged with conspiracy to commit murder, promotion of anarchy, and threatened use of deadly weapons at school. Instead of a headline-grabbing tragedy, the Marshfield incident is simply one more tale of what might have been if someone had not talked and someone else had not listened. Yet creating those relationships and spotting warning signs can be difficult, as residents of Red Lake, Minn., now know. The attack there Monday is the worst school shooting since Columbine. But even as the nation mourns the tragedy, experts on school violence are calling attention to how much has been learned in the six years since Columbine, and how much better prepared schools can be to avert such disasters - if they have the will, the time, and the resources to do so.
