The role of nutrition in health promotion and disease prevention programs Position of ADA
J Am Diet Assoc. 1998;98: 205-208.
Nutrition and dietary factors play important roles in health promotion and chronic disease prevention (1-3). The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (4) and the Food Guide Pyramid (5) articulate this role and provide basic dietary guidance and practical food recommendations for the public. Landmark reports such as the Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health Diet and Health: Implications for Reducing Chronic Disease Risk (3), and Recommended Dietary Allowances (6) provide additional recommendations and population-based standards for optimal nutrition. The Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives (7) document notes that up to 50% of chronic disease mortality is attributable to lifestyle factors that can be changed. For example, the Surgeon General's report states, "For two out of three adult Americans who do not smoke and do not drink excessively, one personal choice seems to influence long-term health prospects more than any other: what we eat." (2, p 1). In the changing US health care environment, it is increasingly evident that preventive health care services emphasizing the role of diet, food choices, and physical activity are needed to reduce the cost of health care in traditional, public health, and managed care settings. To improve the health of the public and increase their knowledge about nutrition, dietetics professionals should become members of program staff and interdisciplinary teams that are involved with planning and delivering health promotion and disease prevention programs in community and public health settings, schools, worksites, places of worship, and corporate locations.

Childhood Obesity – An Overview of Policy Options In
    Legislation for 2003-2004
2005 Update Now Available Obesity is epidemic in the United States. In the past two decades, rates of overweight and obesity have doubled for children and tripled in adolescents. The percentage of overweight among children and youth has climbed to the 15 percent range. Being overweight or obese increases risk for the top U.S. causes of death and disability including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Across the country, obesity carried a $117 billion price tag in 2000, accounting for 9 percent of the nation’s total health care costs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that if current obesity trends continue, one-third of all children, and one-half of African-American and Hispanic children, born in 2000 will develop diabetes. Fortunately, much can be done to prevent costly obesity-related health problems. State legislators have begun to aim prevention efforts at obesity risk factors that begin in childhood—such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and the increase in children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

NUTRITION EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
Also available as PDF This paper is part of a series of nutrition policy profiles prepared by Prevention Institute for the Center for Health Improvement (CHI). Background The goal of nutrition education is to motivate participants to eat a healthy diet. Children are a very important audience for nutrition education because a healthy diet is essential for their normal growth and development, and because children are establishing food patterns that carry into adulthood. Good nutrition promotes not only better physical health and reduced susceptibility to disease, but has also been demonstrated to contribute to cognitive development and academic success. Left to their own devices, children will not automatically select healthy foods. Their innate preference for sweet foods makes them particularly vulnerable to the highly sugared cereals, soda, and candy that are marketed to them virtually from birth. In order to develop lifelong healthy eating patterns, children need to be introduced to a variety of nutritious foods in a positive manner.
