HANDSPRING GAINS MOMENTUM IN EDUCATION MARKETPLACE Popular Visor handheld computers provide administrative and classroom solutions at prominent universities and secondary education institutions, including West Point and the University of Illinois MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. (October 22, 2001) The U.S. Military Academy at West Point purchased 2,200 Visors and issued one to each freshman and junior cadet as an essential tool for managing schedules. Each year, incoming freshmen at West Point are required to purchase a computer, while juniors are provided with free upgrades, and this year, West Point provided all incoming freshman and members of the junior class with Visor Platinum handheld computers. "We were impressed by the expandability, reliability and cost of the products," commented Major Bill Turmel, chief of information technology services for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Students will use the handheld computers primarily for their organizer capabilities this year, but the Academy is exploring ways in which Visor and Springboard modules can be integrated into course curriculum. In the Los Angeles Unified School District, more and more high school administrators are utilizing Visors for student management. For example, at Grover Cleveland High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, administrators and security staff are using an application on their Visors called Tracker, which allows the data in the school's student information database to reside on the Visor. Administrators and the security dean use Visors to promote student safety on the school campus, as well as address the issue of students wandering the campus out of class, as faculty members can use their Visors to verify students and their schedules. "The student attendance and grade information stored on the Visor allows staff to provide 'on the spot' guidance to students," said Assistant Principal Harry Ibach. "Habitual class absentees have been greatly reduced."

Walden University History
Walden University has grown from a visionary idea in the late 1960s to become a comprehensive university committed to quality higher education, positive social change, and broad access through distance learning.
Milestones
Walden celebrates 35 Years of Inquiry for Social Change. National Technological University, the nation’s largest online engineering master’s degree university, merges with Walden, creating the fifth school at Walden, the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Walden celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walden by honoring The Thoreau Society for its work dedicated to the ideals of Henry David Thoreau. Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc., changes its name to Laureate Education, Inc., and acquires the remaining interest in Walden University. Enrollment reaches 13,000 students in 17 degree programs. More than 6,000 degrees have been conferred since 1970.
Paula Peinovich, Walden’s vice president for academic affairs and former vice president for academic affairs at Excelsior College, becomes the seventh university president with a “virtual investiture” and commencement ceremony that is streamed live over the Internet. Former Minneapolis mayor Sharon Sayles Belton receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Walden offers its first bachelor’s completion program, along with new Ph.D. programs in Community College Leadership and Public Health and a Master of Public Health. Enrollment: 8,000.

Service Academy Nominations
Each Member of Congress is allowed to make a limited number of nominations for each military service academy. My nominees for appointment to one of the academies are selected on a competitive basis, using criteria determined by the academies to be indicative of one's potential for success in the military. All nominees must reside in the Seventh Congressional District of Minnesota. Each candidate for a nomination must meet the following basic eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of entry to a service academy:
  • Age: Be at least 17 years old, but not have passed your 23rd birthday.
  • Citizenship: Be a United States citizen.
  • Marital Status: Be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation for support of a child or other dependents.
At the beginning of the Academy selection process, you should open a pre-candidate file with each of the military service academies. You can obtain additional information about the academy admissions process through your high school counselor or academy liaison officer.
