The Elmer L. Andersen Library is uniquely suited to the task of preserving the records of human thought and achievement for the citizens of Minnesota. Here are stored over 1.5 million volumes of books, manuscripts, illustrations and artifacts, protected and preserved for posterity. The practical realization of Governor Andersen's vision of the "fourth mission" of the University, the Elmer L. Andersen Library preserves, maintains, and passes on to future generations the raw materials for research and discovery. How can any building ensure that, when the inquiries of tomorrow's researchers emerge, these resources will still exist? How does one safely store and protect treasures such as the manuscripts of Pulitzer Prize- winning poet John Berryman, or the corporate records documenting the emergence of the electronic computer industry? How does one preserve the institutional history and evocative memories of the University of Minnesota, from the evolution of Goldie Gopher to the campus masterplan of architect Cass Gilbert? Will the stories, personal and institutional, of immigration and social welfare be available to future researchers? And what of the books, journals, and non-print media from other libraries throughout the state? Will they be retained, even when space in these greater-Minnesota libraries is no longer available?

University of Minnesota Libraries offers blog space for faculty staff and students
UThink: Blogs at the University Libraries Announcement Archives UThink is available to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. All you need to login and start blogging is your U of M Internet ID and Password. You can create as many blogs as you want, and attach as many authors to those blogs as you want. A faculty member could have a blog for every class he or she teaches, and attach the students in those classes to his or her blogs as authors to encourage discussion and debate. A student could also have a blog for every class, or just use blogs to express opinions and viewpoints about world events. A student could also create a club blog, or a blog for his or her friends, and also attach as many authors to those blogs as he or she deems necessary. Faculty could also use the blogging system to track a research initiative, or even publish the drafts of papers they are working on. Posted by jajacobs at April 5, 2004 03:01 PM in:

Genealogy Resources Available at the University of Minnesota Libraries
While there is no collection or staff specifically dedicated to genealogy in the University Libraries, the approximately 5 million volumes, a nationally-acclaimed map library, several thousand newspapers, and well over a million government documents constitute a rich resource for genealogists. However, genealogists often come to Wilson Library with unrealistic expectations of what they will find and go away disappointed and frustrated. Much of your basic research should be completed before you come to the library. You will need to bring with you the correct spelling and spelling variations of individuals' names and place names (foreign characters, e.g

Eight of these units are in the Elmer L. Andersen Library . This page provides links to the home pages of each unit from the pull-down menu. Brief descriptions of the units are listed below. The unit's home page gives instructions for visiting and accessing archival collections and contact information for the unit and its staff. All collections are available to both university researchers and the public. In 2004 Special Collections and Archives units embarked on a 15-month project to encode finding aids into Encoded Archival Description.[Finding aids are descriptive guides or inventories that have been created by the archivist to provide information about the contents of the collection.] Information about the project is available on the EAD Project Page.
