University of Minnesota Libraries unveil blog service
Filed in: Libraries Shane Nackerud (author of the "Blogging and the U of M Libraries" white paper, discussed here ), announces the University of Minnesota's unveiling of UThink: Blogs at the University Libraries Some of the features of the service include:
  • No advertisements. Integration with the U of M Central Authentication Hub (x.500) for access to the system using Internet IDs and Passwords. This means no messy username/password maintenance for us, and easy access to the system for students/faculty/staff. Allows students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to create multiple blogs, really as many blogs as anyone wants. Allows blog owners to easily attach other authors to their blogs to create team blogs, class blogs, club blogs, etc. Blog authors can attach anyone that has an Internet ID and Password to his or her blog. Creates the necessary blog directories (the main directory and the archives directory) on the fly without any administrator intervention. Uses of one of the most popular blog software packages in the world: Movable Type.

The UThink project at the University of Minnesota Libraries provides personal, class related, and departmental blogs to the students, staff, and faculty of the University of Minnesota. Anyone with a U of M Internet ID and password can create a library hosted blog. So far, over 1,000 blogs have been created, with over 14,500 individual entries, and over 1,900 individual users making UThink the largest academic blogging site in North America. This presentation will focus on how we got to this point and where we'd like to take the project next. We will discuss why we created UThink, and the goals we have for the project. We will also discuss the backend architecture of the system, policy decisions necessary to host blogs, integration with other library and campus systems, and we will give a demonstration of the system itself. http://blog.lib.umn.edu

    100 New EAD Inventories
As the final phase of a multi-year NEH grant, the University Libraries recently mounted 100 EAD-encoded finding aids for collections held by the Children's Literature Research Collections (CLRC). These collections represent some of the most significant and heavily used groups of papers, illustrations, and books in the archive. Adding 100 new finding aids constituted a major expansion of the University Libraries online archival inventories.

Research and development of digital technologies are a campus-wide priority at the University of Minnesota. A new Digital Technology Center (DTC), currently under construction, is scheduled for completion within two years, and will serve as a focal point for new technology initiatives and research. The University Libraries will play a central role in the DTC. Units within the Libraries already are engaged in a multitude of services and digitization initiatives that very easily could be described as part of our overall Digital Library effort. However, the Libraries have only just begun to identify many of these projects and services under a collective Digital Library identity. Since January 2000, several significant decisions have strengthened our Digital Library presence. The following report highlights many of the achievements made during the past six months, but is by no means comprehensive.

    MINITEX Partnership
We partner with MINITEX Library Information System (approximately 60 employees), which is funded separately by the state and housed within our facilities. MINITEX is the regional support network for OCLC and provides document delivery (returnable and nonreturnables) services to MN, ND, and SD. MINITEX shared the cost of a building renovation that provides two training rooms and a 20-station computer training room. We share use of these spaces. MINITEX co sponsors two symposia (one on collection development and the other of reference services) that we offer each year. They contribute to half of the cost not recovered through registration fees (our staff and MINITEX staff attend without cost) and participate in annual planning. We often work together to bring a national speaker to address both staffs. Submitted by:

    SDT: Budget, Mentoring, and Courses
In 2001 , the Libraries implemented a mentoring program through which each assistant librarian working toward continuous appointment and promotion is paired with a senior librarian, who has agreed to serve as his or her mentor. We provided all participants in this program with articles on mentoring and had an orientation session. We chose mentors outside the individual's team or unit and have checked back with the mentors at three-month intervals to ensure that contact is continuing to occur. Informal comments received so far indicate that the program is working well and providing the kind of support and counsel that we hoped. Our classes offered by SDT are organized into five categories: core classes, multimedia skills, office skills, personal/professional development, and supervisory skills. In 2001, we implemented mandatory training for Libraries employees. All employees are required to take:
    • New Employees Orientation Ergonomics Understanding and Implementing Libraries Policies.

Elmer L. Andersen, statesman, civic leader, and activist, died November 15, 2004. A former Minnesota governor, Andersen was also an advocate for and champion of the University of Minnesota and its libraries. In the summer of 2004 the University of Minnesota Libraries had the great fortune to celebrate with Governor Andersen on the occasion of his 95th birthday (see image, left). With his passing, the University Libraries and its staff recognize the many contributions of an outstanding citizen, a passionate leader, and a true friend. Visit our online tribute to Elmer L. Andersen. "What nobler purpose can there be for a University than to gather up the prizes of a culture preserve them, propagate them, make them availableso that the best of what has gone before can be preserved and built on?" Elmer L. Andersen On May 14, 1999, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents unanimously voted to name the newest library facility in honor of former Governor Elmer L. Andersen. It was indeed a fitting tribute to a man who has been the most stalwart of friends to both the University and its Libraries for many years.
The Elmer L. Andersen Library is located on the West Bank of the Twin Cities Campus of the University of Minnesota. This state-of-the-art facility houses eight University special collections and archives units (shown below), the central office of the MINITEX Library Information Network, and the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC).
