We all see the images on television of the horrible loss and suffering endured by so many people as a result of Hurrican Katrina. We all want to do something to help. Americans, and people from all over the world, have been offering enormous resources. Aside from the desire and need to assist with relief, Hurricane Katrina presents an opportunity to deliver our mandated curriculum standards via a vehicle that is relevant, real-life, meaningful, motivational, and that incorporates many 21st century skills. The September 2005 edition of the 21stCenturySchools newsletter is full of ideas for parents and teachers, including service-learning projects for students. Hurricane KatrinaService Learning Projects District AYP Status Improves The Minnesota Department of Education released its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report, along with Report Cards on every public school in Minnesota. Richfield Public Schools met state requirements or made sufficient progress toward the requirements and received favorable ratings on all but five of the 216 different measures that go into AYP status. A school must achieve AYP on all measures – 100% - to earn a "5-star" rating on the state report card. Anything less results in no more than a "2-star" rating, both for the school and the district. At the high school level, Richfield's African American students, students with limited financial resources, and students for whom English is the second language did not achieve AYP on the reading and math assessments.
