Geography and technology
in dairying Edward Lotterman
Agriculture Editor Just as some argue that biology determines destiny for human sexes, so geography long determined destiny in agriculture. In The Land that Feeds Us , University of Minnesota geographer John Fraser Hart describes how soils, topography, rain and temperature shaped agriculture as the United States was settled and how these factors are still important in determining which crops and livestock are important in different regions. Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota are synonymous with dairying to many people. In 1992, Wisconsin farmers sold nearly $3 billion worth of dairy products which accounted for over half of all farm revenues in the state. But this regional strength in dairying was established a century ago in the late 1800s because the region's fertile soils, rolling topography, abundant rainfall and moderate temperatures gave it a comparative advantage in milk production based on grazing. Minnesota and Wisconsin's lush rolling pastures provided abundant forage, but were not competitive with the flatter prairies of Illinois and Iowa in corn and hog production or the more arid plains of Kansas, North Dakota and Montana in turning out wheat and beef.

Graphic scale from a 1595 map, from David Greenhood, Mapping (1951), p. 45. We have got together a very strong and coherent program under the historical geography banner for the 2001 conference. I am delighted to say that this includes sessions from the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science, the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, the US National Historical GIS, with many individuals who have also contributed sessions. The final session is a roundtable in which I hope we can draw together ideas on the use of geographical thinking in general and GIS in particular. We have a total of nine sessions who have listed historical geography as their primary network. A provisional timetable for these is given below. Most of the practical details necessary for attending the conference are published by the SSHA I would like to draw your attention to the requirements of the SSHA to pre-register for the conference. The conference venue is the Palmer House Hilton, if you intend to stay here I suggest booking early as it will fill up. There are cheaper places to stay in Chicago. If anyone has any good suggestions please let me know so I can pass them on. Finally, the 2002 conference will be in St. Louis, October 24-27. To get the arrangements for this off to a flying start it would be great if people could bring suggestions about this to the

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who organised a session for your hard work. We have sessions on a wide variety of themes including environment, agriculture, transport, industry, urban development, GIS, metadata, electronic publishing and cultural geography with speakers coming from all over the world. We are also hosting a book session on Anne K. Knowles book Past Time, Past Place: GIS for history published by ESRI Press in which we hope to explore the issues raised in the book and more broadly, issues concerning the use and usefulness of GIS in historical research. The sessions listed below are those whose main sponsor is the historical geography network. A full timetable, that also includes abstracts for each paper is also available either sorted by network or time Most of the practical details necessary for attending the conference are published by the SSHA wewould like to draw your attention to the requirements of the SSHA to pre-register for the conference. Technical skills in aerial photography, mapping, computer applications, survey research, and writing are the geographer's tools. All terrestrial activities are subject to geographic analysis. Students in the program learn specific geographic techniques and their application on regional, national, and global levels. Studies in the field, and in effective communication and higher level problem solving, further prepare students for immediate employment in entry level jobs and for graduate study.
Program Features: Participation in the North Country Geographical Society may qualify students for induction into Theta Gamma Upsilon, the international honor society in Geography.

Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Minneapolis E u lis] Pronunciation Key , city (1990 pop. 368,383), seat of Hennepin co., E Minn., at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River, at St. Anthony Falls; inc. 1856. The largest city in the state and a port of entry, it is a major industrial and rail hub. With adjacent St. Paul (the two are known as the Twin Cities), it is the processing, distribution, and trade center for a vast grain and cattle area. Minneapolis is also a banking and financial center with a significant high-technology industry. Chief among the many manufactures are food products, electronic equipment, instruments, graphic art products, machinery, fabricated metals, chemicals, and textiles. Although the central city's population has declined since the 1970s, the suburbs have grown. An influx of African Americans and immigrants began to change the city's racial composition in the 1990s. The falls were visited by Louis Hennepin in 1683; Fort Snelling was established in 1819; and a sawmill was built at the falls in 1821. The village of St. Anthony was settled c.1839 on the east side of the river near the falls. Minneapolis originated on the river's west side c.1847 and included much of the reservation of Fort Snelling. It annexed St. Anthony in 1872. The city became the country's foremost lumber center, and after the plains were planted with wheat and the railroads were built, flour milling developed, with the 50-ft (15-m) falls supplying power.

As a member of the GIS Standards Committee of the Minnesota Governor's Council on Geographic Information, LMIC helped develop a standard format for GIS metadata (the Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines) based upon the federal model of the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. LMIC makes available software (DataLogr) to aid data holders in recording their metadata in conformance with the Minnesota guidelines.
