Resources for Minnesota Geography
Most family historians have a basic library of resources to supplement their research, such as a dictionary and a contemporary road atlas. That atlas can provide answers to questions such as "What county holds the land records?" or "What is the name of the river where Grandma fished?" The resources listed below can also help. Some are no longer in print, though they might be available at libraries or used/rare bookstores. All are invaluable to those researching Minnesota roots. On-line:

  • Minnesota Place Names , originally by Warren Upham, but with major additions. Compendium of place names, collected from early settlers. Organized by county, it includes some short biographies about people connected with naming of Minnesota places, dates for when communities and counties were organized, information about railroad towns, lakes and streams, etc. There are sections on street names for Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth. This book is considered the "Bible" for place names. Originally published as part of the Minnesota Historical Society's Collections, Vol. 17

Montana in her heart, fourth-grader qualifies for state geography contest
by L.A. Jones
Union editor Lincoln Elementary School’s Rachael Hegstad has a special place in her heart for Montana, and it’s earned her one of 100 spots in the Minnesota Geography Bee scheduled for April 2 at Macalester College in St. Paul. The fourth-grader from Coon Rapids will compete with 99 other fourth- through eighth-graders across the state after answering a question about where an eruption of wildfires occurred in 2003. Rachael, who correctly responded Glacier National Park, naturally knew the answer because she and her family had returned from Glacier only some 48 hours after the vicious wildfires burned a swath through some of the most pristine wilderness in the western United States. “It happened right in the same spot where I was camping,” she said. As a fourth-grader competing against older seventh- and eighth-graders, Rachael is looking forward to the competition, albeit with a certain amount of apprehension and the hard work of studying for the statewide contest. “I can’t wait until I go,” she said.

Several weeks ago, my family attended the Festival of Nations in St. Paul. As we passed the booth of Eritrea, a small, new African nation, I asked my 11-year-old daughter if she knew where it was. "Of course," she replied. "Eritrea is next to Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia." Amazed, I began probing to determine the extent of her geographic knowledge. I quickly discovered that it was impossible to stump her. Lesotho, Brunei, Moldova? Most adults would scratch their heads. But my daughter was able to locate each with precision. Moreover, she clearly took great pride in knowing exactly how the world fits together. My daughter's newfound geographic prowess was the fruit of an extraordinary curriculum she has studied as a sixth-grader at Visitation School in Minneapolis. Called "Mapping the World by Heart," it is the brainchild of David Smith, who created it while a seventh-grade social studies teacher in Massachusetts. (For information, call 1-800-342-0236.) As the end of the year approaches, my daughter is studying for her final "Mapping the World" exam. She and her classmates will draw a map of the world entirely from memory. They will include major mountain ranges, rivers, and bodies of water, and locate everything accurately in terms of latitude and longitude.

Warren was born on April 15, 1921, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 1939 in the largest graduating class in Minnesota history at that time. He enrolled in the University of Minnesota but left in 1942 to volunteer for the draft. He served in the 518th Military Police Battalion in New York City before going to Officer Candidate School at Fort Custer, Michigan. He became a civil affairs/military government officer and landed on Juno Beach during the Normandy Invasion on D+1 with an inter-allied unit. He continued across France and into Germany until the end of the war. He returned to Saint Paul in January, 1946, as a captain, and remained in the reserve until 1964, attaining the rank of major. He belonged to units at Fort Snelling in Saint Paul and later to a unit in Fargo. Warren returned to the University of Minnesota and completed his degree in geography in 1946. He taught at the U of M and later at Saint Cloud State University before coming to North Dakota State University in 1957. He remained on the NDSU faculty until his retirement in 1991. He had attained the rank of professor, and was made professor emeritus on his retirement. He received his PhD from the U of M in 1962.

In Memory: Regents' Professor Emeritus John R. Borchert
John R. Borchert passed away on March 30, 2001. We have lost a dear friend, a generous colleague, an inspiring teacher, a public citizen. Now we turn to the loving and piognant work of capturing this well-lived life in a few short words. We will be inadequate to the task. John was a member of the University of Minnesota geography faculty from 1949 to 1989, and to 2001 was still an active and vital presence in our geography community. John earned his A.B. degree at DePauw University in 1941. After working briefly in the private sector in North Dakota, where he met Jane, John joined the Air Force as a meteorologist, spending some time in training at M.I.T. After the war ended, John decidied to become a university professor. He earned his PhD. in geography at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1949, and joined the Minnesota geography faculty shortly afterward. "One of the things that appealed to me about this area was the setting of the University in an urban area. It was an opportunity to work on real problems and immediate questions with people who were helping to make and shape the maps, not just interpret them." In those days, when the department was small, "we would assemble and argue about the nature of geography." (One of the six or seven graduate students at that time was Fred Lukermann.) At mid-career, as the department's graduate student population grew, John's urban field study trips to Chicago, by train, became notorious. Graduate students preferred that mode of transportation, because John's constant attention to the passing landscape made it extremely hazerdous to let him drive a van.
