Minnesota Road Trip
A Minnesota Geography Lesson Plan
(Updated 2-9-04)
Summary : This intermediate to middle-grade lesson plan is designed to explore four of the five themes of geography (location, place, movement, and regions) as they relate to Minnesota through planning a seven-day trip around the state. Though this activity can be done individually, it works best if students complete it in groups of three or four. Suggested time for the project is about five hours (five one-hour class periods). Objectives : 1) Students will plan a week-long trip around the state of Minnesota which includes all four regions of the state.
2) Students will write a detailed itinerary for their trip which consists of descriptions of each day's agenda including both places visited and routes traveled to get from place to place.
3) Students will fill in a blank map of Minnesota with the places and routes listed in their itinerary. Materials : Good Minnesota road maps, line drawings of Minnesota (have students draw basic Minnesota maps, or go to Minnesota Map Outline or Printable Minnesota State Map to print a basic map), and Internet access.

Minnesota Geography- Minnesota's eastern and central regions are fairly hilly. The highest hills are the Sawtooth Mountains on the north shore of Lake Superior (elevations up to 2,300 ft/700 m) and the Mississippi River bluffs. The western portion of Minnesota is mostly flat plains. A significant part of the state is under cultivation, and the areas not farmed are heavily forested. The "Land of 10,000 Lakes" actually boasts closer to 12,000 waterways. Minnesota Map Search for Accomodations in these Minnesota Cities Alexandria Grand Marais Rochester Duluth ...

Resources for Minnesota History Books
Every family historian searches for local and regional histories. While they continue to be produced, with time the older books and pamphlets become more scarce. They become even more valuable with age, as they often contain first person accounts of the settlement of the area, biographical sketches of pioneers (sometimes with portraits), lists of soldiers, pictures or drawings of old schools and homes and so on. Some get reprinted, such as Folsom's Fifty Years in the Northwest. Some get re-typed and put out on the internet. Others, if they can be located at all, are in reference libraries where they cannot be borrowed or perhaps even copied, or in a rare bookstore, with a price tag that recognizes how rare they really are. Copies of the original Andreas 1874 Illustrated and Historical Atlas of Minnesota are like that. As collectors take apart the books to sell the plats separately, it's not uncommon today to see price tags in the hundreds of dollars and higher. If the data is all one needs, a microfilm is now available. It's not as beautiful as the colored lithos, but the film also includes the fold-out birds' eye maps which were not included with every published atlas.
