When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or the life of another.
Helen Keller It is a great loss when we underestimate the importance of our efforts in the life of another. One man, who had to spend some time in a hospital, waited day after day to receive a card or a telephone call from those who cared. Some people, who he expected to call or write, did not. Others, who the man had not felt close to, and whom he did not expect to hear from, surprised him with their concern. He came to place greater value on those who had cared enough to call or send a card. A little act, the best we have at that moment, makes a big difference to the person on the other end. Knowing this ...

Educational Vouchers
This guide is compiled by staff at the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library on a topic of interest to Minnesota legislators. It is designed to provide an introduction to the topic, directing the user to a variety of sources, and is not intended to be exhaustive. In particular, it is focused on items available in the Legislative Reference Library. "School choice" refers to a number of different school alternatives such as interdistrict or intradistrict transfers, magnet schools, postsecondary enrollment options, charter schools, alternative learning centers, and private school choice through state-funded vouchers or tax credits. Minnesotans already have most of these options available to them. Even though state legislatures have made numerous attempts to pass a wide variety of voucher programs, relatively few have been enacted. Of those that were created most have been challenged in court based on First Amendment issues related to the separation of church and state/establishment of religion. In the 1971 United States Supreme Court case, Lemon v. Kurtzman

Education Issues Series
Special Education Inclusion Educators' Bulletin Board Classroom resources IDEAS Resource pages on educational issues ... ONLINE SERVICES This article was updated November 5, 2001 Inclusion remains a controversial concept in education because it relates to educational and social values, as well as to our sense of individual worth. Any discussion about inclusion should address several important questions:
  • Do we value all children equally? Is anyone more or less valuable? What do we mean by "inclusion?" Are there some children for whom "inclusion" is inappropriate?
There are advocates on both sides of the issue. James Kauffman of the University of Virginia views inclusion as a policy driven by an unrealistic expectation that money will be saved. Furthermore, he argues that trying to force all students into the inclusion mold is just as coercive and discriminatory as trying to force all students into the mold of a special education class or residential institution. At the other end of the spectrum are those who believe that all students belong in the regular education classroom, and that "good" teachers are those who can meet the needs of all the students, regardless of what those needs may be.
