Background on the Parents Helping Parents Project
When PACER was established in 1977, it began with one project: Parents Helping Parents. Then as now, PACER was staffed primarily by parents of children with disabilities dedicated to educating other parents and improving the lives of children with disabilities throughout Minnesota. With a small grant from the Minnesota Department of Education, PACER conducted a five-month pilot project and demonstrated the effectiveness of the "parents helping parents" model. Although today PACER offers more than 30 programs for parents, students, professionals and other parent organizations, the original philosophy of "parents helping parents" remains the foundation upon which PACER has grown. Whether addressing the issue of juvenile justice or assisting youth in making the transition from high school to work place, parents on our staff share their experiences and their knowledge with others so that all Minnesota's children with disabilities may have a better future.
Services of the Parents Helping Parents Project
Parents Helping Parents provides a wide array of services to help parents better advocate for their children with disabilities. The project is staffed by parent advocates who assist parents by distributing informative materials, conducting workshops and trainings, and providing one-on-one consultations with parents throughout Minnesota.

Resources for Parent Educators
Parent education has evolved from a didactic teaching model to a relationship and support model. In my work as an Intensive Family Services counselor, I am able to design an individualized parenting skills training for each client. To enhance the effectiveness of group training, parent educators may include support elements in their program. Three Elements of an Effective Parent Education Program
  • Direct Instruction
  • Small Group Support
  • Outreach and Follow-Up
  • Parenting education is often part of a coordinated family intervention. I like to keep a sign-up sheet on my office door that parents can sign to see me individually after the group session. It is helpful to include paraprofessionals in the group. These important team members provide transportation, home visits, and informal support to parents. Cultural similarities between professionals, paraprofessionals and the families can mean the difference in an effective, supportive program and one that is distant and irrelevant to families.
