Cooperative Extension Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs
When we first started this project we identified 27 volunteer water quality monitoring programs sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension in the United States and its territories. Now we are up to 38! We are always looking for programs we have missed and have had help from people across the country to find 'new' programs. Our latest change to this page was to identify which programs are sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension and which are affiliated in other ways such as by providing technical assistance with trainings, educational materials, equipment, or meeting space for volunteer monitoring events. The map above shows where and to what extent Cooperative Extension is involved in volunteer water quality monitoring across the nation. Not shown is an Extension co-sponsored program in American Samoa. The first of these programs began in 1978, the most recent this year. In parentheses next to each program's name is the year that the program began. Program volunteers are monitoring a wide range of aquatic habitats including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, estuaries, and drinking water wells.

The Plant List References Used An Introduction
Soluble salts can cause harm to plants if they are in high enough concentration in water or soil. This effect is mainly indirect by pulling moisture out of roots and reducing the uptake of water and nutrients to affected plants. Some salts can be toxic to root tissue. Tip and edge burn of leaves, slow growth, nutrient deficiencies, wilting and eventual death of the plant can occur if the salt level is excessive for the plant and the problem is not corrected. To avoid plant loss in salty sites, a soil test should be done to determine the soil salt level and plants selected based on their salt tolerance. Soil testing laboratories will report the salinity (conductivity) of soil in decisiemens per meter (dS/m) (equivalent to the old measure of millimhos per centimeter). The salinity of irrigation water is typically reported in micromhos per centimeter (umhos/cm) or microsiemens per meter (uS/m) .

Research Interests I conduct IPM research that is complementary and supportive of the educational and productivity needs of vegetable growers and processors in the upper midwest. Both basic and applied research is done to develop and implement integrated pest management (IPM) programs for vegetable crops, including: sweet corn, cabbage, cucumber, and carrot. Specific areas of interest include the integration of plant resistance with Bacillus thuringiensis Bt ) for O. nubilalis management in sweet corn; timing of Bt and conventional insecticide applications; development and validation of easy-to-use sequential sampling plans for insect pests; development of hybrid-and growth stage -specific action thresholds for O. nubilalis
