The school board is a policy-making body responsible for selecting the superintendent and overseeing the District's budget, curriculum, personnel and facilities. The school board is granted authority to carry out these duties by the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota Legislature. The Board of Education began using policy governance as a framework for its work in March 2001. Policy governance commits board members to work as a team to set goals for the District, monitor implementation and results, and provide greater outreach to parents and the community. To better engage the community, several board meetings each year will be held in schools. The Board's intent is to provide the opportunity for a two-way dialogue with the community on specific policy issues. Joseph Erickson, Chair

STABLE FUNDING
The 2003 Legislature adopted a budget solution based on the Governor’s budget recommendations to eliminate a projected $4.5 billion projected budget shortfall without raising taxes. The 2003 budget solution cut $185 million out of Minnesota public school education funding for Fiscal Years 2004 and 2005. No increase was adopted in the general education revenue formula for 2004 or 2005. Minneapolis Public Schools lost $14 million in revenue for the 2004-05 school year, after adjusting for enrollment declines, because of the 2003 cut in school funding. Minneapolis Public Schools revenue loss was among the largest in the state. The 2005 Legislature has an opportunity to correct the failure in the past budget cycle to fund public education.
